The Grizzlies acquired the draft rights to 35th pick Andre Emmett from the Seattle SuperSonics in exchange for a second round pick in 2005 and cash considerations, and also acquired the draft rights to 36th pick Antonio Burks from the Orlando Magic in exchange for cash considerations. In addition, the Grizzlies selected Sergei Lishouk from Ukraine with the 49th pick in the NBA Draft.

“We are delighted to acquire what we perceive as two of the best athletes in the draft in Andre Emmett and Antonio Burks,” said Memphis Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West. “As a staff, coaches included, we wanted athletes, and both Andre and Antonio are complete players. In Sergei we acquire a big forward who we feel will eventually be able to provide a rebounding presence for our team.”

Thrilled that we were able to get Antonio Burks. Thrilled.

And I like getting Andre Emmett because I'm a big Bob Knight fan, and I'm familiar with his game. I hope he's able to make the roster. They got two of my 2nd round favorites.

As far as the Euro, I don't care either way. He'll probably never amount to anything, but we don't have room for anyone else this year. Freije would have been nice though.

Great night for Memphis, considering what we were working with. This basically guarantees that there's a trade in the works.

Burks was my #1 sleeper and Emmett wasn't far behind. And West continues to work his magic!

"I'm so happy, I can't believe this," said Burks. "It's like a blessing."

More than three hours into the draft, after Dick Vitale had gone to bed, after too many picks and too many words, the Grizzlies made it worth everyone's long wait.

They did what Burks had asked all along.

They went and got their boy.

"It's a good day for the city isn't it?" said Gary Colson, special assistant to West.

Yeah, it is.

Not just because Burks grew up in the hardest parts of Memphis. Not just because he played for the Tigers, forged himself into a star and showed everyone what grit and hard work can do.

Because - and here's the part West would like to stress - the kid can flat play.

"It's nice to add local flavor to your team," West said. "We did not do it for that reason. We did it because he's a fine player."

West realized this after watching Burks work out for the Grizzlies on May 17.

After that workout, he told Burks he was going to get him one way or another.

When you've got just one pick fairly late in the NBA draft on Thursday night like the Grizzlies, you do the logical thing.

You do something that everybody in your city loves. You trade to acquire University of Memphis point guard Antonio Burks.

The Grizzlies got Burks, the No. 36 pick in the second round, from the Orlando Magic for cash considerations. They also grabbed shooting guard Andre Emmett of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the No. 35 choice, from the Seattle Sonics for cash. A second-round draft choice in 2005 was also involved in obtaining Emmett.

Finally, with their draft selection at No. 49 in the second round, the Grizzlies chose Ukranian Sergei Lishouk, a 6-11, 232-pound forward who will likely stay overseas another season to gain experience and strength.

I think the defensive effort J Will gave during the playoffs might have sealed his fate. Saw a blurb on hoopshype that the Grizzlies made an offer for Kenyon Martin Maybe we will deal J Will to New Jersey as they prepare to move J Kidd somewhere else.

Hey, it's possible. I know for one thing though is that the Grizzlies can't keep stockpiling these point guards without getting rid of someone. We drafted Troy last year, so there was absolutely no need for getting another point guard unless we get rid of one or two of em. I don't want to see Jason leave really. I would rather like to see Earl get traded along with Troy, but I would like to hold off on the Troy trade until next year. We need to see him play first, before we make any rash decisions. ( What, am I running this organization?? haha, I should. )

I would like to see us get rid of Earl for a solid starting center if possible. Who's on the block now that the draft is over? How about we trade Earl Watson to Seattle for the rights to Robert Swift. Swift will become a good center. I just feel good about that kid. Even though he is the upright ugliest kid ever, that doesn't say anything about his game.

I like this trade idea it could be a package deal with Watson, Wright, and Humphrey. This Swift kid is really getting slept on dude is tremendous in the post and has wonderful skills on the offensive and defensive boards.
