Grizzlies Sign Battier to Multi-Year Contract Extension
Quote:
Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced the club has come to terms on a six-year contract extension with Shane Battier. In keeping with team policy, financial terms of the deal were not announced.
“We are thrilled to come to an agreement with Shane,” said West. “Shane embodies everything a basketball player should be: hard-working, a good teammate, and a positive role model. His attributes both on and off the court epitomize what we as an organization value and look for from our players.”
“I am proud of my first three years in Memphis,” said Battier. “I am also very grateful for the commitment that the Grizzlies organization, Michael Heisley, Jerry West, Hubie Brown and the entire coaching staff have shown towards me. I look forward to being an integral part of this team for years to come, while putting forth as much effort into the team, the organization and the community as I have since first joining the Grizzlies.”
Excellent move by the Grizzlies. Battier is a class act.
Though I'm of the opinion that they should trade him with the understanding that he'll be offered an assistant coaching position once he stops playing. He's already got the leadership potential. Now just get him a wide variety of experience and you're set.
Definitely need to hear the money before forming a definite opinion, but with Battier I assume it's something reasonable. If that's the case, good move by Memphis on this one.
around 40 Million over six years. He is certainly better than Brian Cardinal, but he isn't as talented as Miller or Williams, who both have 40 million plus contracts.
so what are you guys gonna do with the logjam at power forward? You have Pasol, Stro Show, Outlaw, and Cardinal capable of playing the 4. Now with Battier signing, that leaves Cardinal as the backup 4. Where are the minutes for Stro Show/Outlaw?
I hope Jerry West has an ace up his sleeve, like maybe a possible deal for a bigman. There are lots of teams who need a power forward like Stro or Gasol, (Golden State, Seattle, Miami) to name a few.
Memphis needs to condense their lineup a little bit. Right now they have 11 rotation level players....some better than others. The best being Gasol, Stromile, and Posey. The pretty good ones are Cardinal, Battier, Wells, Miller, Williams....and the ok ones are Watson, Outlaw and Wright. They have a boatload of talent, but they don't have a superstar to carry them to the next level. They should be trading some of their rotation level players for a big time player. Why not trade Gasol and Wells to Toronto for Vince Carter, or to Stro and Wells to Seattle for Ray Allen? How bout Lorenzen Wright and Gasol(or Stro) for Dampier? There are lots of teams who would be willing to take these young talented players in return for their superstars who are either disgruntled or won't resign. I hope this is the path that Jerry West is going on.....otherwise there simply isn't enough playing time for all the guys in Memphis.

"Fortson, that's all he does - makes free throws and pushes."
Danny Fortson in reference to the anonymous Sonic who tattle taled to the Seattle-Times...
"I think somebody on this team might have girlish characteristics that need to be turned into a man. Because if we're going to win, we need warriors. We don't need girls. Girls are for the dance team."
Fortson also said "he wouldn't doubt it" if there were a gay player in the NBA but hopes he's not a Sonic.
"That would be a bad deal," Fortson said. "He might want to keep that one in the closet."

How about Bonzi Wells, Stromille Swift, Bo Outlaw, Earl Watson, and Dahntay Jones for Ray Allen, Vlad Rad, and Jerome James?
