The Sonics' window for offering Chris Wilcox a qualifying offer began a day after the Miami Heat won the NBA title, and on Friday club management submitted its offer to Wilcox, the forward who will command major free-agent attention.
The offer gives the Sonics the right to match any offer Wilcox will receive from other clubs, and he can begin fielding those on July 1. Wilcox averaged 14.1 points and 8.2 rebounds in 29 games after being acquired from the Clippers.
A team that could emerge as the Sonics' primary competition is the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Sonics have to decide whether they will pay Wilcox's expected asking price of $8 million to $10 million per season. The 6-foot-10 forward doesn't turn 24 until September and could be one of the team's cornerstones if he re-signs.
Don't know what to make of this. No doubt Wilcox would be a welcome addition to the frontcourt, if we'd be getting the 2006 Chris Wilcox.
This would have to be a sign-and-trade obviously, if we're to meet his $8 to $10 million per season demand. Pricey...especially if we're to believe the constant rumors that expenses will be cut with new ownership.

1. He would be welcome in Memphis.
2. I think those spending rumors are not correct. I think the future owners would just prefer the current regime not add any more long term salary before the offer is made/transaction is finalized.
I would prefer Boozer but if Wilcox could be had cheaper then that would leave us more assets to get a wing scorer (Adam Morrison?)

I think Wilcox played better this year for a contract (think Erick Dampier). Boozer would be a better player to trade for since he has been more consistent during his career so far.
I'd rather have Nene, since he is more of a C than both Wilcox and Carlos "the new Karl Malone " Boozer...

From my perspective in Seattle, Wilcox played better because we gave him the opportunity to play and to contribute. Unless some team throws a ridiculous amount of money at Wilcox, or the Sonics pull off a big trade, Wilcox will be a Sonic next season.
Seattle Times - The Seattle SuperSonics and Chris Wilcox are now exploring sign and trade possibilities since the two sides are split on new contract negotiations, the Seattle Times is reporting.
"The longer it drags on, we will come to the point of no return where Chris will not look back and will no longer want to be in Seattle," said Jeff Fried, the Washington, D.C.-based agent for Wilcox. "Since it appears that the Sonics are unwilling to give Chris his fair-market value, we're looking at other options."
According to one NBA source, as many as nine teams have contacted the Sonics about Wilcox, but general manager Rick Sund has declined to seriously entertain each offer.
Golden State is believed to be the latest team to inquire about Wilcox, but discussions with Seattle ended quickly because the Sonics are hoping to land an All-Star forward in return.
Many believed the Sonics would offer Wilcox the six-year, $42 million deal they extended Vladimir Radmanovic last year, but Seattle's offer was slightly lower because only a few teams have the salary-cap flexibility to aggressively pursue the 6-foot-10 power forward.
I think he's absolutely worth $42 million when guys like Nene, Chandler and Dalembert have been getting $60 million deals in the past year. I'd even go a little higher than that.
At $7 million starting salary, I believe Stromile + Hakim Warrick would work under the cap.
Wilcox is a good player. If we can pull it off then hats off to Jerry & Co. I would assume that we would package Stro and maybe Miller in the S&T. My only concern is the wait time before we can trade Stro in a package deal. If Seattle can hold out, then definitely pull the trigger.

Well, the good thing about that is that Stro hasn't technically been traded to us yet.
I think the Gay trade is a done deal. The thing to remember about Wilcox is that his new deal is going to make him a BYC player. It is a good thing we have our trade exmption to help with that if it comes to it.
I still say we are dealing Eddie Jones or Mike Miller depending upon what kind of deals are out there: EJ for a young up and comer, Mike Miller for an expiring contract and Cardinal dump.
