Gay wants to be the new face of the franchise!
Gay's goals: Rookie of the year and playoffs
Quote:
On draft night, when seven teams said no to him, the Hartford Courant reported that Gay said, "I'm going to make every one of those teams that passed on me pay."
He said Friday that comment was accurate.
"Yeah," he said, "that's my intention."
Young said Gay comes to the Grizzlies with high, but realistic, expectations.
"The best thing is they've got Pau Gasol," Young said. "Rudy's not going to need to be the first option. But his goal is to win Rookie of the Year and to make the playoffs."
There's another goal, too: starting to become a, if not necessarily the, face of the franchise.

Re: Gay wants to be the new face of the franchise!
The more I hear, read and watch Rudy Gay, the more I believe he's going to have an immediate impact.
Not knowing exactly what the roster will look like come opening day, I expect Gay to have a permanent starting job before 2006 is over.

Re: Gay wants to be the new face of the franchise!
Another thing.
From everything I've read from Rudy, the "lack of desire" stuff has been played up...maybe because the bozos at ESPN couldn't find any other part of his game they could exploit as a weakness.
If this guy is unmotivated, he sure doesn't sound like it.

Re: Gay wants to be the new face of the franchise!
I still have a hard time wondering why they say he's unmotivated. This is what I hate about the media and people know why I say this.
Steve Nash is unselfish, but Rudy Gay is unmotivated. I don't like it. Since Gay has the ability to be an explosive wing scorer, but he chooses (at the age of 19) to be unselfish, he lacks desire, while Nash is just so unselfish. These talking heads sicken me.

Re: Gay wants to be the new face of the franchise!
Well that has a lot to do with the position they play as well.
They say Jason Kidd is unselfish, but Keith Van Horn lacks desire and is known in basketball circles as a ***** on court. So it's not a race thing.
I don't think unmotivated is the right word, but there were moments where he went quiet where he should've exploded and taken over. He would take over for a stretch and then fade out. I'm sure Grizzlies fans aren't upset with his tournament performance because if he played up to his potential in the NCAAs he would've been selected a lot earlier.
I don't doubt that he'll become a star, but I'll just watch and see.

Dude was 19 years old. I'm going to call BS on that lack of desire. Keith Van Horn didn't lack desire at all. He was just soft when he got to the pros. In college, he was better than practically everyone. He got the pros and his lack of confidence (not desire) killed him.

Well saying he's 19 is a pretty big plea cop. Being 19 doesn't explain 5 points Vs Albany.

But they blew Albany away didnt they.
Rudy probably didnt want to score more points to humiliate his opponents.
He's a nice guy you see.

Re: Gay wants to be the new face of the franchise!
Rudy Gay= the only superstar in this draft, he'll make the Bobcats look stupid for passing him up.
He definitly can average double digits given the right amount of minutes.
