Following the initial concern and disappointment, Grizzlies officials were on the same page with what should happen next.
They want to see Gasol in Memphis as soon as possible.
Now that the Grizzlies' worst fear has been confirmed, the organization will ask Gasol to expedite his return to the United States.
Gasol will require surgery following an examination by the team's doctor.
"Is this the same thing that happened two years ago?," Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello said Saturday.
"You have to get him back and let our people look at him."
Gasol underwent X-rays and an MRI exam Saturday at the Kato Orthopedic Clinic in Saitama, Japan, according to the Spanish release.
The 7-footer was hurt Friday near the conclusion of Spain's 75-74 semifinal victory against Argentina.
He'll sit out today's final against Greece, and is certain to miss the Grizzlies' training camp that begins Oct. 3.
If the Grizzlies' diagnosis is the same as Spain's, then Gasol's injury (fractures of the fifth metatarsal) is something from which he can recover and resume playing at a high level.
****! Not good I hope he rocovers quicker or you are in trouble. Anyways I still hope Memphis woun't try to stop him playing for NT. And my congrats you have WC goldmedalist/MVP in your team
Ah, this has happened to me before. Fracture of the pinky toe. Put me out about 3 months, but I could still walk and such i just had to keep weight off of it.
I don't know about Gasol, but I didn't need surgery and my foot is fine now. I guess his fracture is a bit bigger than mine then.

Oh goodie. Another opportunity for Swift to make something of his career.
Again, let's bring Etan Thomas! Swift is replaceable (Warrick and Johnson can replace his skills and athleticism...)

Grizzlies forward Pau Gasol underwent successful surgery today at the Campbell Clinic to repair a broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot. The surgery was performed by team physician, Dr. Fred Azar, and assisted by foot and ankle specialists Dr. Greer Richardson and Dr. Drew Murphy.
Gasol will travel to Spain on Monday for recovery and will return to Memphis to begin rehabilitation in two weeks.
"We were very pleased with the surgery,” said Dr. Azar. "We inserted a 45mm screw and bone graphs into the fifth metatarsal. Pau will wear a cast for two weeks while his foot heals and then begin the rehabilitation process. His expected return to play is approximately four months.”
