Re: Game 34: Grizzlies vs Celtics - 1/5/07
Thoughts:
Atrocious performance defensively. Pau and Alexander just couldn't have done much less putting bodies on the Celtics' big men. Pau had five blocks, but I'd sacrifice those if he'd decide to at least look interested on that end of the floor every single play. My Lord, that was shameful.
(And it's been bad all year inside, whether it's Warrick or Swift or Gasol. Or even AJ. It's been bad on the perimeter, whether it's Mike or Rudy or Eddie. Now we're just seeing more possessions of it per game.)
The game was close in the first quarter and after that, Boston just took control. I never really felt like we were going to make a run. Mike Miller - who's been a beast for three games in a row - just didn't have it from deep tonight, but he was still our best player by far. Tonight is a clear example of the difference between Mike settling into a scorer's role but making plays for others and Mike playing scared and looking to pass the ball at every opportunity. Loving his statlines lately. Good for him.
Scrubabrine always hurts us. Give me a break. It's a brain type and two performances against the Grizz each year that even keep him in the league.
Kinsey played like an undrafted rookie. I don't see a whole lot of potential there.
The swingman depth on this team is the PITS. Outside of Miller and Rudy Gay once in awhile, we have Dahntay Jones, who isn't showing much in the run-and-gun era...Grandpa Jones, who isn't showing anything at all no matter the philosophy...and Tarence Kinsey is all we have left? Yuck.
Looking only at the box score, purely numbers-wise, I have nothing to complain about from Pau Gasol tonight. So why was I so irritated with him when I was at the game? Five blocks, I guess, but maaan, has he lapsed defensively. I'm wondering how long we can use the conditioning excuse - "This is only his 12th game back!" sounds ridiculous.
Not complaining or being one of those Memphis fans, but just a few things I hope are corrected by next season. I'd much rather see us get beat 128-119 than get beat 87-82. Now we just need some real NBA-level talent to the roster.
