Observations from Tonight's Game
I really wish Kyle Lowry was healthy as it would be wonderful to see him playing again. I have a lot of faith in him, but man it feels like he's been out forever. They weren't lying about it being a bad loss.
The problems with Gasol in the NBA are magnified in this game. He is always looking at the refs, while Boozer just out muscles him. He always looks forlorn and in pain and it becomes kind of frustrating to watch. I really wish he would gut it out. The chance to add a Horford, Oden or Durant is worth it IMO, because those guys are NBA ready. In fact, Oden or Horford are the best possible players for Gasol because they can be bruisers.
Deron Williams has been slicing this team up because Chucky Atkins can't stop him from getting into the lane *we really need Lowry back.*
Now the Grizz are competing their asses off. They play so hard and I don't really think they're untalented. I think they are simply very young. Warrick, Roberts, Johnson, Gay are all NBA quality players. They just all happen to be first or 2nd year players. Dahntay Jones is a 9th man on a good team, not a starter. Mike Miller because of his mindset is a 6th man (guy has like no confidence).
Chucky and Damon are backup point guards.
Going forward it will be nice if the Grizz kept Gasol and the running style of basketball. Even if they drafted Joakim Noah, it would be worth it. He bring energy and can run the floor with Noah and brings size (7'0) as well.
My ideal Memphis offseason:
C - Greg Oden (draft)/Alexander Johnson
PF - Pau Gasol/Lawrence Roberts
SF - Rudy Gay/Hakim Warrick
SG - FA (Deshawn Stevenson perhaps?)/Mike Miller (reprising his 6th man role)
PG - Kyle Lowry/Chucky Atkins
That team would be much improved and while probably not good enough to make the playoffs. But losing that horrible Eddie Jones contract and possibly dealing Stromile will help the team down the road.
I mean the pieces are here to improve, but if Pau wants to go, he should go. Damn they really couldn't stop Deron Williams from penetrating. Ridiculous. He had like 15 dimes.

Re: Observations from Tonight's Game
You know what's weird is that when I saw Eddie - 8% from the field all year - struggling to get the ball up the floor, I had a strange feeling that he was going to nail that jumper. The game just had that feel. And sure enough, it looked good from the second it left his hand.
If this game doesn't change things as far as Pau Gasol's concerned, it definitely makes them a whole lot more interesting. He might not have made defensive stops all night, but to his credit, he played nearly the whole game at 100 percent effort. IMO, if Gasol shows to the franchise that he wants to be here, thick or thin, he won't be traded. And by the same token, the fanbase won't turn on him.
Boozer, Okur and Deron Williams are just beastly. What a win.

Re: Observations from Tonight's Game
I also wish we could have defended that Boozer/Williams pick-and-roll a little better. And by "a little better," I mean "at all." You knew what they were going to do every time. Figure it out. But watching the Grizz the past six years, pick-and-roll defense has never been our specialty.
Nothing you can do about Okur. He just hit tough shot after tough shot. Just sick.

You covered a lot there, all you needed was for Rudy Gay to do something and you're night would have been complete.
How is Pau Gasol supposed to handle Utah's frontline basically by himself there? Also what about the 13 boards and the 12 assists, almost unprecedented for a 7fter, no praise for that?

Sounds a little like malone and stockton don't you think? You know it's coming, you just can't stop it. When boozer fouled out, I knew it was over then. We had no low post scoring when he fouled out. I was surprised when memo hit the 3's and thought "hey I hope it's a double OT" but this loss hurt as a jazz fan.

His defense was matador-esque, but to his credit he stepped up late and made his FT's and was the catalyst for many easy baskets for his teammates. The thing is, I know he doesn't want to foul out, but guys like Alexander Johnson, Lawrence Roberts and Hakim Warrick protect the rim much better than he does. I mean he let Boozer lay-it-in many times tonight.
I like Gasol a lot, but the defense tonight was atrocious.

Boozer and Deron have been doing that all season long. Boozer gets a lot of lay ups because of execution and breaking down the defense.

Re: Observations from Tonight's Game
Pau's other career triple-double was fun to watch because it was his first and he was really in the flow that night. It was in a pretty convincing win and besides that, it was against Johan Petro, Robert Swift and whoever else Seattle trotted out that night.
This was in an overtime game on the road against a team that's right smack in the middle of the Top 10 teams in the league. Against two guys who aren't really great defenders, but they're big, strong bruisers. Millsap and Harpring are gritty, hard-nosed guys, too. And his offense wasn't really even there tonight. Yet he still made plays and really fought for those rebounds in the fourth quarter. He was also talking and gathering his guys in huddles on the sidelines. That's what a leader does. If he shows that he wants to be a part of the team and our future going forward, then he about zero chance of getting traded. If he wants out, he'll be out.
Terrific game for him.

I agree that it's pretty darn unstoppable, but we're also the worst defensive team in the league and are notorious historically for being absolutely awful on the pick-and-roll. Opponents running the pick-and-roll on us is fairly common. We just flat-out don't get it.
That's not to say Deron and Boozer weren't running it to perfection.
Parker and Duncan kill us with it constantly. So do Nash and Amare. But it's telling that Deron and Boozer are getting mentioned in that same company.

Re: Observations from Tonight's Game
I didn't want to seem like I was taking away from his performance. He played very well and led his team to victory, but I was not impressed with his defense, so that's all I'll say. Maybe I'm being critical because he asked out, but I want him to stay.

Re: Observations from Tonight's Game
I'd actually like to see him stay there but i think the handwriting is on the wall, if he goes to Chicago he'll have the luxury of playing with one of the best defenders in the league(Wallace) and that should make both those guys better.
HKF, if Gordon goes to Memphis in a trade you may have to change your zipcode.

I had to laugh b/c I can remember so many times Eddie choked at the end of games in Miami, and to see him hit that shot, I was shocked.
Eddie is one of my all-time favorite Heatians, but the guy is a choke-job.
Nonetheless, congrats on the win!

That's why the Heat game in December - when Posey nailed that ridiculous shot at the buzzer - didn't bother me a whole lot. These things have a way of evening themselves out over 82 games.
