Re: Thoughts about the first game
I sure hope that Stoudamire won't start, the only thing he did yesterday was passing the ball around like a veteran point guard who doesn't have anything left in the tank. Even if Conley and Lowry play bad, they bring more to the table than him. He is just beyond the point where he can be productive.
Conley was trying, but he needs to get accustomed to the NBA rules and the faster pace compared to college ball. Once Iavaroni put Lowry in the Grizz started to play harder and like always everyone seemed to have much more confidence, he got everyone involved and the shots were falling.
Navarro was really good, the guy is never going to be a good defender, but when he puts effort into it you can keep him on the floor. Offensively he is definitely a valuable addition to the team, he can create his own shot, can shoot the rock and he has played for long enough to consider him an intelligent basketball player. I still don't know how well his overall game will translate into the NBA, but he should be able to score in double digits if given the opportunity.
Rebounding was a big issue, nobody seemed to be willing to go the glass expect Mike Miller who showed once again that his all-around game has improved over the years. He should thrive in the up-tempo game. The team defense was bad, but it's way too early to make judgements about things that need time to get better.
