Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown doesn't believe enough people have noticed that his team ranks among the NBA's top 10 in points, steals and forced turnovers.
His remarks were intended for the media Sunday after the Griz won their fifth straight game.
But Mid-Southerners are mostly missing nuances of the Grizzlies' success, judging by attendance figures after the first eight home games.
The Grizzlies are drawing fewer fans than a year ago following back-to-back games that attracted fewer than 12,000 visitors in The Pyramid.
Last Friday's game against Washington drew an announced crowd of 11,737. The Griz reported 11,538 for Sunday's win over Portland, which improved the team's record to 11-8.
The Griz were 2-17 after 19 games last season. They also averaged 15,155 fans after eight home dates for 2002-03 compared to 14,738 for this season.
Before Monday's games, only 10 of the league's 29 teams owned a better winning percentage than the Griz. But Memphis ranked 23rd in league attendance.
Everyone knew the Grizzlies attendance was going to be mediocre until the new arena was finished. The Pyramid is a horrid place to enjoy a basketball game. I'm a 5'7" female who even finds the seating uncomfortable.
The attendance prior to the last two games had been relatively good. But regardless, marketing needs to do their job.
it's not just the Grizzlies. other teams, including Houston, have seen a decline in attendance. it'll pick back up soon.
