Griz Primed for Offseason Dealing

Quote:
Having produced no answers for the San Antonio Spurs in their first playoff appearance, the Grizzlies must now respond to the formidable challenge that an offseason presents non-championship contenders.

"I know what we need," forward Pau Gasol said. "But I can't say a lot."

When Griz president Jerry West talks about Hubie Brown being most deserving of the NBA's Coach of the Year award, he's quick to point out the 70-year-old's greatest feat.

"He hid a lot of our weaknesses all year long," West said. "This team does have warts."

What will West do to make the Grizzlies smoother for 2004-05?

"My job is to be objective," West said. "I don't care who (the player) is. My hope is to do what's best for the franchise."

"Jerry has the right judgment," forward Gasol said. "He's going to do what he has to to make sure this team has a better chance next season. Let's see how the summer goes for everybody, and hopefully we'll earn back that level of respect we earned this year but couldn't show in the playoffs."

The questions, starting today, center on what team West will unveil next season and how he'll go about reconstruction.

Glaring is the team's need for frontcourt size and more defensive strength.

"We've got a lot more needs than that," West said.

Translation: This won't be a quiet offseason.

I can't wait to see what West will pull out in the offseason. I am wondering if we will see a really big name in Memphis next season.

I have a feeling that somehow Jwill or Earl will be gone after what Tony Parker did.

Which is sad.

I hope they can move J Will before his contract outgrows his performance. Earl will likely be leaving anyway after his contract is up unless the Grizz make him a starter.

I think Jason Williams is gone, and two or three of the forwards (Stro, Lorenzen, Bo, Battier)are gone also, perhaps for a big name. They have too many small pieces, now they need one big piece. Who? That's anybody's guess, which this all is.

After a post-season spanking I wouldn't be suprised if West in a small or big way says F the "team" team and goes for a superstar player.

If so go for a big man who can rebound the ball good, anyone think of Marcus Camby? He played his best basketball this season and I'm pretty sure he's a free agent this year. Can't be too sure though, those injuries could always come back.
