Gasol, Swift, & Battier Pose Different Contract Issues
Quote:
Presuming Gasol's future is a top priority, it's never too soon to consider the big picture. The 7-foot Spaniard and swingman Shane Battier are eligible to negotiate contract extensions this summer under rules of the collective bargaining agreement.
Because negotiations often come down to money, not length, Gasol wondered aloud recently when asked if he is worth a maximum deal - a six-year package in the $90 million range.
"That's a good question," Gasol said. "It's hard for me to talk about (it). I'm not going to sell myself. They have to decide that. My agent and me have an idea of what we want, and what we would take and what we wouldn't.
"I want to be the guy, and I think I can. But I want everybody else to know it too. When it comes down to it, (contract negotiations) will be mostly about that detail right there."
"This team is growing up and heading in the right direction with Jerry being here," Gasol said. "He's going to do whatever it takes to get this team right. I wish I could stay here and make this franchise a winning and respectful franchise."
Privately, Battier and Swift share that sentiment. Battier still is, in many ways, the face of the franchise.
