I was talking about the stories all over the net, not this forum discussing it.
Did you ever do what they did as a elementary student as a joke? I did as a innocent joke and so did other students (i grew up in Los Angles fyi). It's the one feature of all the races in the world that you can mimic. Maybe the Spaniards are know for actual racist comments idk, but if they arent then to me this picture is in jest and just saying we are going to China for the Olympics. IMO not the best idea, but not racist, just goofing around.
Please go to Chinatown and do that in any Chinese restaurant to the manager or cashier. I'm willing to bet you are more likely to get your *** kicked then have people smile at your goodwill gesture.
everyone makes mistakes....but the fact that the spanish team is acting like they did nothing wrong, is what irks me....
kind of like a "huh??? what did i do???" attitude....
morons...
That's what bothers me too. If they just say some generic apology like "We didn't mean to offend anyone, if we did we apologize" then I guess I would be ok but they are actually defending themselves. I hope the US beats them by 50 or more when they play.
I understand the other side of the coin but IMO it was meant to be all in good fun (but not a smart idea since here we are discussing it). While racism against every race happens I believe racism against people of Black ethnicity has been WAY more of an issue in today's society. The stereotypes I have heard about Asians during my time in this world are, short, and smart...not really insulting (oh no, they are short! ). I can go down a big list of racist generalizations about black people that Ive heard. Thats the difference in my mind on what KennethTo brought up. Well, that and if the Spanish team had painted their skin yellow THAT would be racist, no doubt. This is just a childish gesture.
childishness and racism are not mutually exclusive...
Ok...I want to know people opinions on this...Can you make fun of a race without being racist?? Every race has something you can make fun of if you really wanted to. Does making fun of it always have to imply you think its a lesser race? For instance, I am 1/2 Iraqi, should I be offended when I have a friend of mine say something like "dirka dirka jihad muhammad". Im not. I usually say "Shut up or Ill blow up your house infadel"
There is a grey area on this subject IMO.

Bad, bad, bad. The Spanish seem to pull this flippin stuff every year in an International competition, regardless of who it is. It's flat out racist no doubt. Why they would do this is beyond me.

it all depends on the context of the situation...if you and a close friend are joking around, of course it would seem okay, as both of you know that you don't really mean any harm by your comments.....
however, the spain pic is presented on a global stage, and there is no buffer in terms of intent for the picture....it just looks like the spanish team is making fun of asians in general, and therefore, people are going to get pissed....add in the fact that they don't appologize for their actions, and rather try to justify them......

Of course you can. It all depends on who says it. If a friend of mine says something like that I would know it's a joke. I've seen comedians make fun of asians on tv and I find it okay because I know it's comedy as long as they don't cross a line. If I'm playing ball with some friends and some white guy playing with us calls me Jackie Chan, I would tell him to STFU and if he says it again, he will end up in the ambulance.
Everyone keeps using the term "making fun of" instead of "being racist towards"...is there a difference?
HKF, what else along these lines has the Spanish team done? I really dont know.
I guess when you KNOW it's a joke then its considered making fun but it's pretty easy for me to judge between making fun and racism. For example on Family Guy, theres a skit where Peter goes to Chinatown and says to every guy he sees "OMG it's Jackie Chan" which I thought was hilarous but like I said when it happens in real life it's less funny because I don't know if your being racist.
Alright fair enough. I get where you guys are coming from. I would use words like bad taste, stupid, childish, insensitive for that pic....just not racist. Hope I didnt make any enemies with my opinion.

Spain has a history of making racial statements or comments to other nationalities for many years in futbol and many other sports. This is just par for the course regarding a country where the men feel superior to people of other ethnicities for some reason, even though most of them are soft biatches.

You bring up another issue IMO. With comedy in general you are allowed to talk about a race in a negative way as long as your really funny. When you joke isnt that funny you get ripped for it. (And no Im not backing up "Kramer" for his N word tirade, he is just retarded...and racist)
