I assume they call you Yao Ming because your the tallest guy there. If they call you Yao Ming because your Chinese, it's not really a racial slur but I would find it offensive.
Well they called me Shaq at first. But then I started hitting some threes, and they called me Yao Ming.
I was the second tallest (and I'm not tall). We had some like 6'9" guy or so in there, but he sucked, was soft, I doubt he played basketball ever in his life, and then stopped dressing like 2 days in.
Very insulting and potentially racist. They probably should have been calling me Rusty Larue or Kornel David.
If your not Chinese then you probably won't understand why it's offensive if people call you Jackie Chan or Yao Ming so I'm not going to try to convince you why you shouldn't do it. If you guys ever visit NYC Chinatown and go to a basketball park and play with Asians and say things like "Pass me the ball Jackie Chan" you will understand.
I think the fact that he got 4 NBA teams to sign him is he most offensive thing.
Rusty Larue wasn't that bad. I remember when the Jazz signed him for the second half of the season, and kind of used him as their hit man to do all their dirty work. He had an awesome flagrant in one of the Jazz's playoff series.
The race card is used that much these days it's getting ridiculous
How is that picture racist? Look what Calderon said "We felt it was something appropriate, and that it would be interpreted as an affectionate gesture,"
I don't know the connotations the gesture might have in US or Chinese, but here in Spain is not used to mock asians but to show empathy towards them.

Technically it isn't. Merrian-Webster Dictionary (online). And just to cover the bases, here are prejudice and discrimination, since they're used. You can be stupid, not funny, insensitive, clueless as to the obvious overriding cultural expectations of the times and place, and more...but still avoid being racist. I meant to stay out of this discussion altogether, but I do think it's important to get our terminology right, at least. It's unbelievable that anyone of such a high profile would do the sort of thing that is generally only acceptable among friends. (And yes, my friends of other races, genders, sexual orientations and religions do make fun of each other's races, genders, sexual orientations and religions. I don't consider us to be bigots regarding any of those things.) But while it is unbelievable, stupid and remarkably insensitive, I don't necessarily think it was racist. That depends on their intentions and beliefs, which we do not know.
so let me get this straight....if the pictures were intentionally made to disparage asians, then it can be deemed racist.....but, if the pictures were made in jest and not meant to make fun of asians, then it's just stupid and insensitive???

since racism is so common and accepted in spain, maybe you spanish people fail to recognize its presence.....

splittin hairs now, aren't we???
Hey, I'm just a believer in using words that mean what we intend to say. I'll let the definitions speak for themselves, only adding that every offensive comment or bad joke isn't necessarily racist, even when it is racial in its nature. Sometimes it's an offensive comment or a bad joke. That doesn't make it right, but it is a different thing than racism. A punch in the arm, a punch in the face, a knife-slash in the chest and a bullet in the skull are all wrong to inflict and they all hurt when inflicted, but they're not all the same thing. Words mean things. It's good to use the correct ones.

Yeah, like the LeBron Vogue cover...

and i asked you a simple question, based on your post

bootstrenf: if the offender doesn't believe the race being mocked is inferior, doesn't hold prejudiced beliefs against and doesn't discriminate against, then it is not racist, according to the definition of the word. Something can be bad without being racist. I know it's more fun to start tossing around certain terms than others, and gods know political correctness is everywhere. As for the condescension, you're welcome. I look forward to another parsing of my post, but it's kind of pointless. I am not interested in talking about this anymore because I don't really have any more opinion than is obvious and already stated. It can make me some kind of villain if that will help you enjoy your next post.

What's funny is, in my head I'm trying to picture this, and all I can see are these Chinese guys getting pissed off and beating ***, but doing it with karate.

But as a coda of sorts, of course a comment or action can be taken differently than it was intended. The act can be one thing, the reaction can be based on it being interpreted otherwise.
