JS: Bucks reach higher to build up blocks
Quote:
Rejection is something the Milwaukee Bucks no longer can do without.
After finishing last in the National Basketball Association in blocked shots last season, the Bucks are showing signs of protecting the paint after the first 10 games.
Center Andrew Bogut already has 21 blocks, an average of 2.1, after compiling just 35 blocks in 66 games last season. The Bucks also have 7-foot rookie Yi Jianlian on their front line, and his long wingspan helps the team's shot-blocking prowess.
It's doubtful the Bucks will challenge the franchise record of 530 blocks, established by the 1980-'81 squad, which featured Harvey Catchings (184 blocks) and Bob Lanier (81).
But they should be nowhere near the embarrassing mark of 224 blocks set last season, a franchise record low (2.7 average). The leading shot-blocker on that team was Brian Skinner, now with the Phoenix Suns, who had 64 wipeaways.
"It's maybe a two-part situation," coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "Our perimeter players are more dedicated to defending, and we're not getting beat off the dribble with one bounce, where our bigs can never get there in time.
"The other part of it is Andrew is locked into it. It's important that he comes and tries to protect the rim. That's the defensive trust we've been talking about."
