JSOnline: Voskuhl becoming contributor

A story on Jake, who has been a pleasant surprise this season:

Quote:
The Milwaukee Bucks acquired backup center Jake Voskuhl as a free agent last summer for several reasons, and one was abundantly clear early in the second quarter of a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Bradley Center on Dec. 15.

With guard Mo Williams handling the ball on the wing, Voskuhl sought out Minnesota guard Sebastian Telfair, who was guarding Williams, and laid the lumber on him. Taking advantage of the solid screen that Voskuhl had set for him, Williams took the ball to the basket for an easy layup.

Voskuhl is a classic example of a player who doesn't have to show up big in a box score to contribute, something the Bucks have discovered over the last couple weeks as his playing time has increased.

"He's really sound defensively," coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "He's got a good knack on the offensive side of the ball to make sure that the ball doesn't stick. He's good with dribble handoffs. He's also really good at just coming out and offering random pick-and-rolls, which I think is a big part of the NBA game, and we need to focus on doing more of it."

The 6-foot-11, 255-pound Voskuhl has been around the block a few times. In his eighth NBA season, he is with his fourth team. He was a second-round draft choice of Chicago in 2000 but played only one season with the Bulls. He then moved on to Phoenix for four seasons and spent the last two in Charlotte.

He was on the free-agent market last summer when the Bucks, looking to add more muscle to their roster, brought him on board.

Voskuhl played little during the early part of the season but has now carved a niche in the rotation as a backup to center Andrew Bogut. Krystkowiak also has played him alongside Bogut at times.

Voskuhl said the key for him when on the court was to keep his mind free.

I kinda laughed when they signed him, but he has been a pleasant surprise. I have never been a fan of Gadzuric so i am not shocked that solid fundamentals, good hustle and a high basketball IQ trumps a player like Dan Gadzuric who is in year number 5 of his "will he ever reach his potential". I like Voshkul, solid back up.
