Chicago - Despite their dismal record and continued losing ways, it still would be a bit of a reach to say the Milwaukee Bucks have begun to unravel. It has become apparent, though, that too much "I" instead of "we" has been woven into their fabric.
The latest evidence of that was their 20-point loss in Denver on Wednesday night, a game in which they trailed by as many as 39 points in the third quarter. In losing 12 of 16 games since their five-game winning streak in November, the Bucks have seen their record plummet to 11-16, and coach Larry Krystkowiak thinks it's time to go back to the basics.
"I think we need to recommit to where we were in training camp, where things were pretty simple," he said after practice Thursday. "Everybody was battling and not worrying about putting up any kind of numbers. Not worrying about anything else. It was all about us. It was all about us and there weren't any 'I's' in the equation."
Tonight at the United Center, the Bucks will face the Chicago Bulls, a team that is also struggling, in a game that will provide an opportunity for the Bucks to start feeling good about themselves again. The Bucks need a road victory, especially now, when one would help wipe away the rancid aftertaste from Denver.
The Bucks were so disgusted with the play in the first two quarters against the Nuggets that, in a halftime interview with Fox Sports Net, assistant coach Tony Brown said he was embarrassed to be a Bucks coach.
Brown still had a bit of steam coming out of his ears Thursday as he explained his comment.
"If you watch a game like that, I just thought the effort wasn't there," he said. "I felt bad for the organization and I felt bad for the coaching staff. We didn't come ready to play and it was evident. There's no way to sugarcoat what happened in that first half. It was evident we weren't out there playing our best or playing with a lot of effort, and it's unacceptable.
"Thank God for the NBA. . . . It's an 82-game season and we have a chance to redeem ourselves. And I'm just hoping that our guys are feeling the same pain that I felt in watching that game and will come back ready to redeem themselves. It was not how we talked about at the beginning of the year how we were going to play."
