Mo needs surgery on his thumb
Quote:
St. Francis - Point guard Mo Williams has been playing with a taped right thumb for much of the National Basketball Association season but the Milwaukee Bucks veteran revealed Thursday that the injury is pretty serious.
"I'm going to have to have surgery on it," Williams said when asked about his thumb. "It just depends on when I want to do it. My intentions are to do it when the season is over."
Williams said he suffered ligament damage in the thumb in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 21 at the Bradley Center in a play involving Lakers guard Derek Fisher.
It's not unusual for players to play with some parts of their bodies taped or braced or bandaged, and Williams hasn't made a big deal about the injury. Because he kept playing with it, there was no need to include it on the team's injury report.
But in games this week at New Jersey and Philadelphia, it appeared Williams had the thumb taped more heavily than usual - just the usual tape, he said - and when asked about the thumb, he discussed how he'd been playing with the injury for some time.
"I've adapted to it," said Williams, who has missed three games because of injury or illness this season. "At first it was really, really frustrating and different. But I've adjusted to playing with it. It's a struggle sometimes handling the ball but I've kind of adjusted to that, too.
"It's always a struggle gripping it . . . you know, like squeezing the ball. I kind of fumble the ball at times because I can't squeeze (the ball with) my thumb . . . squeeze the ball like I usually would to protect it. So I kind of fumble the ball at times but . . . you tape it up to protect it and knock on wood."
