JSOnline: Ivey keeping Bucks afloat
Quote:
Considering the Milwaukee Bucks' losing ways and how banged up their guard corps has been, it's hard to imagine where they would be without Royal Ivey.
When general manager Larry Harris signed Ivey as a free agent last summer, it was with the intention of adding a defensive presence to the team along with some depth at the guard position.
Ivey has provided that and more and has turned out to be quite a find.
"He's one of those junkyard dogs who just keeps coming at you," said coach Larry Krystkowiak.
With Michael Redd sidelined with a knee injury - he didn't make the trip for tonight's game at Memphis and Wednesday's game at Dallas - and with Mo Williams playing with an injured thumb, the Bucks were concerned enough about their situation at guard to have called up Ramon Sessions from the NBA's D-League. Sessions then proceeded to suffer a left-hand fracture in his first practice with the team last week.
With Redd sitting out the last four games, Ivey has averaged 36.3 minutes as a starter, including the 44 minutes at Philadelphia last week.
Not known as a scorer, Ivey raised some eyebrows when he dropped in a career-high 17 points in a victory against Washington at the Bradley Center on Jan. 27 and followed that two nights later with 19 points at New Jersey and then 17 at Philadelphia.
"I was just being aggressive," Ivey said when asked about his high-scoring games. "I got the opportunity and minutes when Michael Redd was out. I just made some shots. For the most part, I was just trying to get a 'W' so I had to step up and take some shots."
