Hunt rips Stern for thinking big, and ignoring the little guy
Quote:
David Stern, the least responsible and trustworthy of the three major commissioners, reminds you of the guy who puts mounting problems at home out of mind by going overseas for a lavish vacation.
From the NBA all-star weekend in New Orleans, Stern talked of plans to add five teams in Europe within the next 10 years. Logistics aside, it sounds like a notion with merit: London, Rome, Berlin, Madrid and Barcelona as new members of a forward-thinking league taking its act international.
But while Rome fiddles with anticipation, Seattle and New Orleans are burning. And you wonder if other at-risk domestic franchises like, for example, the Milwaukee Bucks, might be next to be forgotten amid the commissioner's grand illusions.
Stern said he had given up on a terrific franchise like Seattle, which has filed to relocate to Oklahoma City. The Hornets are a mess, having moved from Charlotte to New Orleans, only to be squeezed again by New Orleans' shrinking population caused by Katrina's devastation.
The other two majors don't allow what Stern has blithely rubberstamped, the reckless moving of franchises. Worse, the recent relocations have occurred from larger markets to smaller markets: Vancouver to Memphis, Charlotte to New Orleans and, what would be the silliest move of all, Seattle to Oklahoma City. That is, if the Hornets don't take permanent refuge in Oklahoma City first.
