Coach K: lack of "share the ball" mentality

JS Online talked with Larry K this morning about the team, and what he said just illustrates the issues the next coach will have to deal with:

Quote:
“I understand the chemistry of a team and I know that there’s a lot of issues with shot selection and taking bad shots,” said Krystkowiak when asked about Redd. “I tried to get our team to play together and I came to the realization that it really wasn’t going to happen.”

As the season wore on, it became clear that Krystkowiak and Redd were not on the same page and Redd admitted as much after the final game in Minnesota when he said that there was no chemistry between the two of them. But, Redd added, they both remained professional in their approach to their jobs.

Krystkowiak said that a big part of the problem was that Redd and his teammates usually practiced with a “share the ball” mentality but that it often didn’t carry over into games.

“I think there was a different mindset in practice than there was in a game,” said Krystkowiak. “It was like two different types of teams so we could never address sharing and moving the basketball because we did a decent job of it in practice. It was in games where it didn’t happen… things became very focused on scoring points and that’s Mike. A lot of times in practice he would defer and wouldn’t be as scoring-minded. So I don’t know how you’re supposed to get better as a team when you could never simulate your play (from practice into games). Practice was different than games.”
