Skiles, not Carlisle, may be next coach 4 pm news conference

Quote:
Continuing to make significant progress in their negotiations, the Milwaukee Bucks might be ready to name Scott Skiles their new coach in the next day or two.

After firing former coach Larry Krystkowiak on Thursday, new general manager John Hammond promised to move forward quickly in the search for a successor and it appears that's exactly what he has been doing.

Hammond waited less than 24 hours after the team's final game last week to relieve Krystkowiak of his coaching duties and he has been moving quickly on the hiring front, also.

The Bucks initially considered a number of coaches from an available pool of candidates that includes former NBA coaches Rick Carlisle, Larry Brown, Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Fratello but indications are that the Bucks have zeroed in on Skiles, who was fired in December as coach of the Chicago Bulls.

"The search is continuing," Hammond said Sunday. "We're making progress and our goal, as stated before, is to react quickly."

Asked if the Bucks had decided that Skiles is their man, Hammond said, "We will not discuss individual names of candidates at this time."

Skiles is a highly coveted commodity who has been linked to coaching vacancies in New York and Memphis as well. It has also been rumored that Skiles might bide his time to see if Miami Heat coach and President Pat Riley stepped aside as coach to pursue Skiles as the new Heat coach.

The Bucks might be moving quickly to head off competition from other teams.

One league source indicated that the Bucks had made Skiles "an offer he can't refuse" but it could not be confirmed what sort of offer, if any, was actually on the table.

If this turns out true, it'll be interesting to see how Skiles deals with Mo and Redd and Bogut.

April 21, 2008 -- Scott Skiles verbally has accepted an offer from the Bucks, erasing him as a KnicksNew York Knicks coaching candidate, according to a league source.

Skiles' imminent hiring strengthens front-runner Mark Jackson's candidacy, which received another boost over the weekend with Jeff Van Gundy's endorsement.

The Skiles camp was disappointed Donnie Walsh did not contact them this weekend. Skiles played for Walsh in Indiana.

"They're not going to get a chance to speak to him now," a source close to Skiles said. "The Knicks head coach is not going to be Scott."

The Skiles camp denies it reached out to Walsh. That Walsh didn't bother to call Skiles is an indication how strongly the Knicks president feels about Jackson, who could be interviewed as soon as Wednesday, with Walsh indicating it's his job to lose.

Skiles' bid may have been damaged because two prominent Knicks starters, Eddy CurryEddy Curry and Jamal Crawford, despised him with the Bulls. Skiles got them traded.

Curry indicated his distaste for Skiles when asked by The Post his reaction if Skiles was hired. "(I'm) speechless," Curry said after a long pause. "We'll see what happens."

A friend of Skiles scoffed at any connection. "If Curry and Crawford despised him, then the Knicks should've hired Scott immediately," Skiles' friend said.

I have to say I am really puzzled. Why would any team pick Skiles over Van Gundy or Carlisle?

Not sure which one would be better. Skiles may be the right person to get control of the ship, at the moment the inmates are running the asylum. There's no real leadership on the team, and lots of locker room issues. Skiles won't shy away from dealing with any of it.

I don't like what Skiles did with the Bulls at all before... I can't imagine Yi developing much under his wings unfortunately

Re: Skiles, not Carlisle, may be next coach 4 pm news conference

Not much would change with Skiles as your coach. His system is very guard-orientated, Mo and Redd would get most of the shots and Yi probably won't develop.
