This is the first time Skiles takes over a team at the start
Quote:
Scott Skiles admitted it will be a new experience for him to take over a team at the beginning of the season, with a full training camp to prepare.
When he had previous NBA head coaching jobs in Phoenix and Chicago, Skiles was summoned during the season to replace departing coaches - Danny Ainge with the Suns and Bill Cartwright with the Bulls. Skiles went 40-22 with the Suns after taking over during the 1999-2000 season, and the Bulls posted a 19-47 record after he replaced Cartwright in November 2003, when he inherited a 4-12 team.
"It's one thing I said to John (Bucks general manager John Hammond) when we started talking," Skiles said after being named Bucks coach on Monday. "I've never done this before; I've always taken over. My first coaching job was in Europe (Greece), and I took over in mid-season. Danny resigned in Phoenix, and I took over. Then I came to Chicago.
"It's appealing to me right now to get going like that, and to be able to start getting to know players."
Skiles admitted there are limitations in the summer, however, with many players not in town and personnel changes being made with the draft and trades.
"These months go by without forming great relationships with your players," Skiles said. "I can go and meet guys and start that process, but until you're in the heat of battle, that's when you start getting those relationships going. That to me, is one of the toughest things.
"Right from Day One, my staff and I will have to establish trust with the guys. They'll have to know they can trust us, that we have a philosophy they can buy into and believe in. They hopefully will see and feel that we know what we're doing and have confidence in us."
