Playing in Europe no picnic for Jennings
Quote:
Brandon Jennings bucked the conventional wisdom when he went to Europe to play for one season.
And it probably hurt him in the draft on Thursday, when he was picked 10th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks.
He didn't get much playing time for Lottomatica Roma in Italy, a situation that often happens to elite American soccer players who take their chances with teams in England, Germany or Spain.
Jennings had to go on a workout tear to convince skeptical NBA teams he belonged in the lottery portion of the draft, even though he was the top overall prospect in the high school senior class of 2008.
His agent, Bill Duffy, even pulled Jennings out of the Madison Square Garden draft room, fearful that his client might be in for a big slide. Instead, it happened to UCLA freshman Jrue Holiday, who wound up being taken 17th overall by Philadelphia.
"It's kind of a feeding frenzy if things didn't work out, and the fact he went overseas," Duffy said today after Jennings was introduced at a news conference at the Bradley Center. "I didn't want people saying, 'He should have gone to school and this and that.'
