Baron Davis: Still Available.

Quote:
The trade rumors surrounding Hornets point guard Baron Davis continue to swirl, this time with the Memphis Commercial Appeal reporting that New Orleans and Memphis are discussing a deal that would send Davis to the Griz in exchange for guard Jason Williams and forward Shane Battier.
Look, if Baron Davis is still available, why not take a shot?

Davis is pretty injury-prone, but heck, the way we've been playing...why not try to get one of the top point guards in the league and shake this team up a bit? He can defend and slash, something we need from our PGs.

A little something I cooked up:

Minnesota trades: C Ervin Johnson (1.3 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 0.1 apg in 7.6 minutes)
PG Sam Cassell (14.8 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 5.9 apg in 29.5 minutes)
SG Latrell Sprewell (12.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.9 apg in 30.5 minutes)

Minnesota receives: Jamal Mashburn (No games yet played in 2004/05)
PG Baron Davis (19.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 6.1 apg in 30.3 minutes)
PF Juwan Howard (8.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.2 apg in 22.1 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -0.8 ppg, -0.6 rpg, and -0.6 apg.

New Orleans trades: Jamal Mashburn (No games yet played in 2004/05)
PG Baron Davis (19.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 6.1 apg in 30.3 minutes)

New Orleans receives: C Ervin Johnson (1.3 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 0.1 apg in 7.6 minutes)
SG Latrell Sprewell (12.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.9 apg in 30.5 minutes)
C Dikembe Mutombo (3.9 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 0.1 apg in 13.6 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -2.0 ppg, +6.7 rpg, and -4.0 apg.

Houston trades: PF Juwan Howard (8.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.2 apg in 22.1 minutes)
C Dikembe Mutombo (3.9 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 0.1 apg in 13.6 minutes)

Houston receives: PG Sam Cassell (14.8 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 5.9 apg in 29.5 minutes)
Change in team outlook: +2.8 ppg, -6.1 rpg, and +4.6 apg.

Minnesota: Get Baron Davis, one of the top point guards in the NBA when healthy, which seems to be the case at the moment. Juwan Howard brings in veteran leadership and a solid big-man. This also opens up the 2/3 positions quite a bit to let Fred Hoiberg play. Jamal Mashburn is in here only to make this trade work .

Baron - Troy/Carter
Hassell - Wally/Fred
Wally - Griffin/Hassell
Garnett - Howard/Griffin
Madsen - Kandi/KG/Howard/Griffin

After this, we trade Wally to POR for Darius Miles. Then try to find out how to get Alonzo Mourning...if he gets healthy.

New Orleans: They do this to get a lot of cap space. Rebuild and sign a big free agent next offseason.

Houston: They can do this to get a point guard. Get back their point guard who took part in their championships, and hopefully make another run.

Wow, this losing streak is really driving me nuts. I took this time to propose a trade that will not likely happen just to make myself feel better about the Wolves' future...

Houston is not desperate for a PG, especially one who is demanding a lucrative extension. Cassell would be nice but without Howard and Mutombo, Houston would have no frontline outside of Yao. Sura, Wesley and Barry are capable of playing PG for Houston and Cassell is a huge defensive liability.

I personally think Kidd is a more realistic trade target, because Davis is still young and will be playing the best ball of his career for years to come. New Orleans is struggling to get people into the stands as it is, and trading their franchise player away for someone like Sprewell will make things a lot worse for them.

i dont see why the hornets would trade away davis and not even get another pg back. One reason they would do this trade though is for the enormous amount of cap relief they would recieve..... other than that i dont see it happening

I read somewhere that McHale has been saying that a deal for Jason Kidd wouldn't happen either.

Maybe Minnesota need to look at some veterans in the last year's of their contracts, because trading away Sprewell/Olowokandi/Cassell isn't going to net you a top-notch player like Baron Davis or Jason Kidd. Maybe Minny needs to look at Shareef Abdur-Rahim, or a player in a similar situation.

West wants to get out of Williams' contract, taking on Baron's makes no sense, especially with his injury concerns. But Baron will be traded, he has made it clear he doesn't want to be a Hornet.
