Time to look to next season
Its looking less and less likely the Wolves will be in the playoffs so its time to look to the future.
http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries/minnesota.htm
Players under contract:
PG Sam Cassell
SG Trenton Hassell
SF Wally Szczerbiak
PF Kevin Garnett
C Michael Olowokandi
SG Fred Hoiberg
SF Ndudi Ebi
Players not under contact:
Troy Hudson
Mark Madsen
Latrell Sprewell
Anthony Carter
Eddie Griffin
John Thomas
Ervin Johnson
We have to get Griffin back and Madsen I think as well, all of the other players are expendable I think. Sprewell is a good player but I just think he was to concerned with his contract this year and did not play well. Based on the recent mocks, Wolves get the 14th pick.
That would be ideal for the Wolves cause we need a lot, we need young talent since Ebi doesn't seem like he is going to do anything. I wish he was a good prospect and had some skill, maybe he does but obviously has shown nothing at all. I hope he has been working on his game considering he has so much time off and money for doing absolutely nothing.
We obviously need talent, not in the PF or C spot as much as we need it in the PG spot and SG spot. Ideally we could get a good big man but what happens with Cassell leaves, just have Wally be a SG again, not a great idea.
Potential draft picks could go as follows.
Jarret Jack- could drop to where the Wolves pick, would be a solid guard, good athlete and is also a good defender. Would provide the team with needed toughness and athletic ability at the guard position.
Danny Granger- good shooter, solid athlete could be a good SG/SF at the next level and it would be a solid pick up.
Sean May- depending on if he comes out, but honestly I think he would be a good PF, we could maybe play both May and KG at the same time, have KG play center like Amare, it might work and May has a lot of ability and will improve the teams rebounding and give us a 2nd rebounder outside of KG.
Joey Graham- very good athlete, would provide us with a solid SF, is built well and is physical. Not a great offensive player but gives toughness and explosive abilty at the SF spot.
Deron Williams- that would be the absolute ideal, but would never happen. He would be a perfect fill in at PG and would be the team PG for many years to come. Is a good defender, nice size, good shooter and a very good pure PG that can also score.
Rashad McCants- would be if the Wolves really get a late pick, but I would not mind having him. He is a competitive player, very good build, is strong, could post up well in the NBA and is a good shooter with a ton of potential as a scorer. Are some question marks but he would be a solid late first round pick.
And I believe we have a 2nd round pick so would be smart to look at
Salim Stoudamire
Jawad Williams
Dijon Thompson
Nate Robinson
Luther Head
Ryan Gomes
Julius Hodge
We need some work though obviously, and we will see what happens. Honestly its a disgrace that KG has not got a NBA title yet, a flat out disgrace.

Re: Time to look to next season
If I was the Wolves GM, I'd let Sprewell go, keep Madsen and Griffin and try to work out a S&T deal with Troy Hudson.
But I'm not, so nvm.

Really? So that link of contracts is incorrect? Well then we have the PG spot fit, but honestly I am not a huge fan of Hudson, he has been nothing great of late. Honestly I doubt he will ever be that good as he was against the Lakers, but maybe he can be if he gets more consistent shot attempts.

See the zeroes after, for example, Ervin Johnson's 04/05 salary? That means he's not under contract next year. There are no zeroes after Hudson's contract, which means he's signed, but Hoopshype doesn't know exactly how much he's making.
He did sign an MLE-ish deal last offseason. Six years.

See how for all the other players it says "$0" in the years they don't have a deal, and Hudson's is blank. I guess that's either cus they don't have the info for Hudson's contract, or the money depends on how he plays or something. I agree though, I'm not that high on Huddy. I'm hoping one of the top 4 PGs in the draft (Paul, Williams, Felton, Jack) fall to us. I wouldn't mind shipping out Hudson or Cassell too if anybody wants them.

Re: Time to look to next season
I would like to see us draft a PG. It seems that the 2 worth having are Chris Paul and Derron Williams, both of whom have no chance to be there at 14.
So, I think either of those 2 (but i like Williams better) has a chance to become a solid PG for years to come, so we need to work out a trade. nbadraft.net has them going 3rd and 4th. If things play out as teams records are as of now, then New Orleans has 3 pick, and Utah has 4 pick. I can see Utah needing a PG, since they traded Arroyo and McCleod and Lopez aren't really long term solutions. However, New Orleans doesn't exactly need a PG since Dickau has kind of broken out this year, plus they Have Claxton. Maybe we could trade them Cassell or Ebi and our #14 for their #3.
Anyhow, we should try to move up to get one of those 2 if possible, I don't know about possible PG in the 2006 draft, so I don't know if we can wait. Cassell will be gone after next season, and Hudson is a very fine backup PG, but a below average starter.
Another possibility is Raymond Felton from UNC, he will probably go in the 6th-12th pick range. It may be easier to make a trade to move up to grab him.
Then again, it is high time that the ping-pong balls fall our way. The NBA owes us from when we got screwed on the O'Neal-Mourning draft and got Laetner. So lets hope we can move into the top 3.

Re: Time to look to next season
Alright come the date of the free agent signing period and the draft i plan on starting a huge wolves in depth thread(s) cuz i just get that excited for the off season! I am just going to go through things right now that things i would do this summer if i were the gm...
Goals for this summer will have to get a lot younger, which could mean giving a rookie a lot of minutes. We have to get "hungry" players who want a championship and are ready to run.
Let us start with the draft.... I am going to say gragner is at the top of our draft board because we need a player like him but he will not be avalible.... Then second will be tiago splitter from brazil but i think he will be gone too. Then there is johan petro but i think we will pass on him... I think our pick is going to come down to 2 guys in the 1st round... It has to be a PF. Yeah they are both undersized..... Wayne Simein and Ike Diogu... I think it comes down to who is going to contribute right away and who is going to stay healthy... I would take Ike because he is a way better post player than simean... The only reason i would take simein is because of his ability to be the other post presence ( played with gooden and collision).
The second round is going to be where our draft will truly be a sucsess or a failure. There are 3 guys in my mind that should be around in our pick area that i would look into the greatest. The first thing though u look if guys like gomes drop, gelebele drop, channing frye, rudy fernandez, salim stoudimire, veremeenko, garcia, and turiaf all drop. Thing is they will probably be gone by our time. The 3 guys i would look for are angelo gigli, julius hodge, and stefano mancinelli... I think we should go oversees for this pick so they can develop there for a little then come over here. My favorite is stefano because he is a freak athlete and is finally developing a 3-point shot. So he is who i go with... Yeah i know not hodge but it doesnt end there...
My thoughts were to trade a future 2nd round pick and cash to whatever team that wants it where hodge is still on the board. I think right there we pick up hodge. This is a must....
Here is the thing with the free agents... We need to resign griffin. I think then we go out and get 4 new guys.... I think we sign former wolves 2nd round pick igor racocevic and then go out and sign james thomas, A guy who brings tremendous toughness and rebounding out of texas... Then we have to go get my guy raja bell. He brings more toughness and a guy who isnt afraid to get in other's faces. I then think we go out and get steven hunter... We need a back up c cuz our guy erv will prolly retire. We will also take a chance at kwame brown but chnces of getting him are slim...
Trades.... I think we have to do the jason kidd and nenad kristic for wally, ebi and cassell.... It is that simple.. I know we dont get younger but we get a leader and a guy who wants a championship...
We hire.... SAM MITCHELL!!!
pg- kidd/hudson/ rakecevic
sg- hassell/ hodge/ hoiberg
sf- Griffin/ bell/ SGs... (mancinelli if ready, we can let him mature in Euro)
pf- Garnett/ diogu/thomas
c- Olowokandi/ hunter/ kristic
I think the 2 guys who might not be around come mid season is either thomas or igor... Our team is very versitile at this point, we got guys who want to win and play with energy. We give griff the starting role he deserves...
stat line for the end of the season
KG 25 ppg 14 rpg 4 apg
JKidd 18 ppg 9 apg 7 rpg
Eddie G 14 ppg 8 rpg 2 bpg
Kandi 6 ppg 5 rpg 1 bpg (i know i am asking for a lot)
Hassell 7 ppg
Hudson 9 ppg 3 apg
Ike 6 ppg 4 rpg 1 bpg
Hodge 5 ppg 3 apg 3 rbg
bell 4 ppg
Hunter 2 ppg 1.5 bpg 2 rbg
Mancinelli may come over... he may not... All i know is he will contribute in the long run. I think we can see him in the 06-07 season or MAYBE 07-08 season.... I know for a fact he will play in the league one day.

Re: Time to look to next season
Minnesota needs an upgrade at Center and at PG. A duo of Olowokandi and Ervin Johnson is about as lethal as Atlanta's duo of Jason Collier and Predrag Drobnjak. It's not easy to go out and sign an impact big man, but when you look at signings like Steven Hunter and Joel Przybilla for minimum deals, you'd have to believe there is better cheap talent at the center position definitely over Ervin Johnson, and possibly even Olowokandi.
I say Minny needs to explore some trades. They need to shop around and see what kind of interest there is in Sam Cassell or even Wally. Most likely, Wally won't be traded because of two things: 1) He's probably the 2nd best player on the team 2) Nobody is going to give up anything of value to get Wally. So that leaves Cassell. He's an expiring contract the summer after this one, and some team with a "win-now" mentality may want to take a flier on him.
As for Griffin, it would be nice to keep him around, but they don't need to overspend on the guy. Hudson, Wally, Hassell, and Olowokandi are all on regrettable deals, and it would be a mistake to over pay for a reserve forward who's not that good.
As for the draft, I really don't know. I usually follow the draft hype a lot more than I have this year, but it seems like there will be a good crop of college players available.

Re: Time to look to next season
I think taking ike, simein, or possibly petro as our 1st pick would be idle. I think taking petro would be a good idea because he is a 7 footer with a good amount of muscle on him and he is a "hungry" player. Then after we pick him we let him stay in france for a year maybe and see if kandi can work hard in his contract year, or let him be a backup for a year.
I think we HAVE to go over seas and get another 2nd-round pick and go after julius hodge. I think if we do take mancinelli and let him stay over in italy for 2 or 3 years we will have a very good player on our hands. From what i have heard from italian league bball fans, stefano is making huge strides with his jump shot...and with his game in general. I think this is one guy we must take right here.
Free agents..... There are a number of players that can be signed for our team, it just matter which is the best one.

Re: Time to look to next season
Looking at potential free agents, i think bringing in willie green and/or samie dalembert would help this team out greatly. POSSIBLY a sign and trade for cassell... That is if they sign both guys... then trade um to us if that it possible.
