Game 41: Wolves (20-20) @ Blazers (17-25)

Timberwolves Look to Snap Losing Streak; Visit Trail Blazers

A good start to the new year appeared to get the Minnesota Timberwolves on track. The turnaround didn't last, however, and it cost coach Dwane Casey his job.

One day after Casey was fired, the Timberwolves look to avoid a season-high fifth consecutive defeat when they visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday.

Assistant coach Randy Wittman will take over as interim coach after Casey was let go Tuesday following an unsuccessful 1 1/2-season tenure. The team went 33-49 in 2005-06 during Casey's first season at the helm, posting its worst record since Kevin Garnett's rookie season in 1995-96.

Minnesota won seven of eight games to open the new year before losing its last four games to fall back to .500. This is the Timberwolves' third four-game skid of the season, dropping them to eighth place overall in the Western Conference.

The Timberwolves (20-20) lost 106-91 to Utah on Monday despite having its two leading scorers return from separate one-game suspensions. Garnett was forced to miss Sunday's 131-102 loss at Phoenix on Sunday for throwing a punch in a double-overtime loss to Detroit on Friday, and Ricky Davis had been suspended by the team for leaving the bench early in that same game.

Davis scored 32 points against the Northwest Division-leading Jazz, while Garnett had 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Timberwolves, though, struggled again defensively as they allowed Utah to shoot 55.6 percent from the field while giving up more than 100 points for the fourth straight game.

Minnesota is allowing an average of 111.5 points and 52.6 percent shooting during the losing streak.

The Timberwolves have failed to score 100 points in four of their last five games after doing so in six of seven. They have had no more than 21 assists in four of six games after a 10-game stretch during which the team averaged 25.2.

"Some nights we just make it hard on ourselves," Garnett said. "If we move the ball, it seems easy. When we play selfish and don't swing the ball and do the things we're supposed to, we look bad."

The Trail Blazers (17-25) are among the league's worst teams in assists with 17.5 per game, though they have had at least 20 in five straight games and have won three of them.

Nine different players had assists for Portland on Sunday in its 99-95 victory over Milwaukee. Blazers rookie guard Brandon Roy scored a career-high 28 points, including nine in the final seven minutes, and grabbed nine rebounds.

Roy's jumper in the final minute helped Portland hold on after allowing Milwaukee to get within three points. The Blazers led by as many as 20.

"We would have lost this last year," said Portland's Zach Randolph, who added 19 points and 12 rebounds for his 24th double-double this season. "This year we fought back and won."

Roy has played a significant role in the progression of a Blazers team which finished with a league-worst 21-61 record last season. He is averaging 23.0 points on 55 percent shooting in his last three games.

"When (the Bucks) came back on us, he made play after play and was able to stop their streak by scoring himself on the other end," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "He makes something happen."

Though Sunday's win was their second straight at home, the Blazers are 10-12 at the Rose Garden this season to join league-worst Memphis as the only Western teams with sub-.500 home records.

Minnesota has lost its last two games at the Rose Garden, including an 88-86 defeat on Nov. 4. Ten days later, however, the Timberwolves snapped a three-game losing streak to the Blazers with a 101-89 victory behind Davis' 27 points.

Re: Game 41: Wolves (20-20) @ Blazers (17-25)

going to OT.

BTW
KG made it into an elite group of 4 players who made at least 18,000 pts 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 for their carrer.he is the fifth to do so.
the first 4 are Malone,Barkely,Abdul-Jabbar and Chamberlain.

hopefully he will manage 3 more rebounds this game just not to hurt he's double double streak.

we are barely winning this game.

Re: Game 41: Wolves (20-20) @ Blazers (17-25)

this was a nasty loss... its hard to tell what exactly we are trying to achieve this season, obviously not contending for a ring, but not making any real moves. i find it really strange.

wolves management drives me insane

Yeah, I don't even know what they wanted for this season to be. It's very perplexing.

Wolves management has been driving me crazy since 1989, since I was six.

This doesn't always work. Missing playoffs and the possibility of becoming first overall pick team is unlikely with Memphis and several others on the top.
