He gets his payout in a flat settlement that was agreed to between himself and the team, but the team takes the salary cap bite on the remainder of his deal. The only thing that his buyout helped was the fact that he didn't count on the roster anymore, and that his salary doesn't count as part of the luxury tax calculations.
