Season-Ending Summaries: Randy Foye
The season isn't quite over, but it's getting there, and so might be a good time to take stock. And one of the most interesting and important players to think about (for the team, not for us--it doesn't much matter what we think about) is Randy Foye, and what he's going to be for the team.
It's hard to rank a second year player anyway unless he's a horrible bust or a star, and Foye is clearly neither one. His injury of course makes it harder still to determine what he may eventually be. But his numbers as a starter are these. (I'm using them instead of overall because those first games were mostly about him getting into shape and rhythm.)
24 games:
12.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 4.6 apg, 2.3 TO/g, 42.2 FG%, 41.2 3pt%, 84.8 FT%.
It's also tempting to note that his stats have improved over each of the four months in which he's played, but frankly, there aren't enough games in the first or fourth months (2 and 3, respectively) for those to count, and so making that kind of statement about just two months doesn't really hold water.
My personal feeling is that Foye has proved he's a confident player, including late in games and in pressure situations. He's a creative offensive guard in terms of scoring, but not particularly creative in terms of getting other guys shots. He is a streaky shooter who can have ridiculous stretches. While he's also prone to some bad streaks, he is a willing and good penetrator, which helps that. His size is great as a PG, and doesn't seem to affect him too negatively as a SG yet.
However, I can't imagine him as a full-time starting PG on a good team unless that team has another creative player basically splitting the job with him: think a better Jaric as an example. (Or to get rid of the sick taste in your mouth now, think Scottie Pippen.) If he can't be paired with a bigger-sized creator, we're stuck with a small backcourt, which I don't like defensively, or a team of four guys who need help getting shots and the (in my opinion) wrong guy for the job trying to do it, Foye, someone who himself should be getting shots, not giving them away.
I'm just not comfortable at the moment with Foye and our future. I wonder what will happen.

I myself am also not fit for him to be our starting PG for years. He just didn't show me personally enough improvement this year. Maybe I should give him a longer stretch of time because of the injury and all. I would like to see a Foye/Mayo backcourt though!

I still think Foye can be a star, not a team carrying super-star like a kobe or anything like that, but a very consistant borderline all star type player down the line.
The injury hurt him because he would have got a ton of minutes this season otherwise.
He has taken some time to get back into things but you can still see the skills there when he has it going.
I think Next season could be his year, to even have a MIP type season

But with his greatest skill seemingly to be scoring points, do you see him as our starting PG? How does that bode for the rest of the team if he is, say, a 20-point, 4 assist per game player? Considering our best offensive option is undeniably Jefferson, I'd think that Foye would either have to significantly change from his mindset of his whole life up till now or be a too-small SG.

Re: Season-Ending Summaries: Randy Foye
I still think he can be a 17-18point/6 assist type player, not the typical point guard but still not too ball controlling where Jefferson, or the rest of the team doesnt get enough touches.
I think getting another Combo guard like Mayo would be the ideal scenario for this team, both guys can pass, both can shoot.. but they arent the 6-1 type combo guard where they are left with no chance on the defensive end.

Re: Season-Ending Summaries: Randy Foye
Foye finished the season really strong, and makes me think he can be a nice building block alongside big al. He can play both guard spots and showed he can score if he needs to.
