Utah signees

Justin Hawkins, a 6-6, 200 G/F from Mayfair HS in Anaheim, Calif. He averaged 15.2 PPG and 7.5 RPG. He can defend the 1,2 and 3 positions and play 2 and 3 on the offensive end.

Josh Olsen, a 6-1, 175 G from Alta HS in Sandy, Utah. He averaged 13.7 PPG, 46 FG%, 39 3PT%, 81 FT%, 3.1 RPG, 2.3 APG and 1.7 SPG. He will probably go on a mission first so he won't be with the team until 05-06. Majerus says he reminds him of former Ute Jimmy Soto.

Ryan Werch, a 6-2, 179 SG from Ripon, Wis. He averaged 18.3 PPG, 47 FG%, 44 3Pt%, 86 FT%, 4.0 RPG, 3.5 APG and 1.3 SPG. Majerus' friends in Wiscosin say he is the best shooter in Wiscosin and a good athlete.

Stefan Zimmerman, a 6-9, 222 C from American Fork HS in Lindon, Utah. He averaged 12.0 PPG, 58 FG%, 75 FT%, 6.4 RPG and 1.3 BPG. He has good skills but needs to work on strength. I think he is sort of a project.

I'm REALLY excited about Hawkins!!!

This guy, from the semi-extensive reading I've done, is explosive. I've heard he can flat out play.

ESPN says he's a top 40 prospect...

My only question on Hawkins is didn't they sign Markson and Chaney last year? That gives them three guys who are basically the same player in the 02-03 and 03-04 class. With scholarships limited because of the number of players who have left it seems they need big guys more than G/F wings.

I know what you mean...

I'm not sure, but it seems that maybe Majerus is trying to go small??

We have a pretty good frosh big man, Chris Jackson, and we have Andrew Bogut coming god knows when from Australia, but I don't know much about him.

The tough part is that the frosh we have now are looking more like cornerstones every day now. If Hawkins is good too, then the only way we could play all of them would be to have four guys on the court all at 6-6 or shorter. That is not a Rick Majerus team.

Somebody could transfer.

Forgot to comment about Mikel before. In case any Wyoming fans are browsing this board, Mikel's an outstanding talent. I've met Mikel and talked to him on a couple occasions. Very nice guy. I even played in a pickup game with him and two other El Camino players, who may be recruited, as they are both juniors (Gyno Pomare and Justin Armstrong). I didn't do too great, as I was the youngest of both teams. I've also seen about 10 of Mikel's games. Pretty good speed, great court vision, and a really good shot from what I've seen. I was hoping SDSU could recruit Mikel, but it seems they didn't even try.

I've seen Mikel a few times too, in the County Champ. Game vs. San Diego High at Cox Arena and against, I believe, Fairfax in the Nike Prep Classic...(they beat nationally ranked Fairfax on a last second layup in the Championship.) And a few times in some Super 60 League games.

Watson is good, but I wasn't really wowed by him. I'm not sure he'll be a combo guard at the next level, because he's small. That 6'1 listing might be a little generous, and he's not a husky guy either. I see him strictly PG at WYO.

Yeah. Definitely a PG in college. But I see him doing pretty well in college, if he improves his overall game. He's already pretty good, but he can improve on many things (passing, shooting, speed). But for a HS player, he was one of the best.

BTW, a name to look out for in the future is Marquis Navarre of El Camino. He went to my middle school last year (set the point record with 48). I think he could go to a D1 school.

Is he a frosh at El Camino right now?

Another name to look for: Chase _____ (forgot last name) and JJ Anderson. Chase goes to La Costa Canyon....frosh....absolute PLAYER. Started varsity and kicks butt. He'll play D1 for sure....probably a well renowned school.

JJ is good too. Not nearly as good, but about 6'4 and plays like a guard...he'll most likely play D1 too.

I can't remember. Haven't talked to him in a couple months (before basketball season). Didn't get a chance to see him play this year, so I don't know if he was on JV or Frosh. You think you've played against him?
