Sounds like a twenty-first century knock-off of Gilligan's Island.

It's a wonderful show. I've been watching every single episode, but one problem is they spread out new episodes over what seems like every 2 months. Good news though, 4 straight new episodes in a row starting next week.

It's hard to keep up. There so many twists that keep unfolding and nothing seems to get solved. Unless you follow it very closely I think it gets a little confusing. Atleast for me anyways.....

Interesting show, for sure. I like how they tie in flashbacks from the characters' past into the show, that makes it really cool.

However, to say this is one of the best shows of all time is quite preposterous. The show has quite a few flaws which sperate it from being legendary. The first is something that is almost impossible to do in the recent episodes of the show: suspend one's disbelief. One of the pillars of any art form is to sit down (or walk in, in the case of theatre) and forget for a while that what you are seeing isn't reality. This accentuates the experience of what you are watching. This idea applies to any art form, and particularly to dramatic pieces on Film, stage and screen. We should approach Lost in this vein. This being said, while the weirdness of the island and the many twists and turns of the plot were acceptable in the early episodes, the story is getting increasingly hard to “believe”. The artifice is being flagged far too overtly for my liking. MILD SPOILER: Jack's resuscitation of Charlie in Episode 10 might just be the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I thought, "Wow, they're really setting a precedent here by killing off a popular character early". Instead, they succumbed to ratings (probably as they should) and staged a ludicrous resurrection. Apart from this, another flaw is that much of the stylistic direction has been lifted straight from the creator’s other good show Alias. I remember watching the first episode and thinking that the music as well as the style and plot structure was almost identical. Perhaps this isn’t a bad thing, but it does flag the show are more conventional then it lets on. However, despite these problems, I’d say that Lost is probably the only dramatic show I follow closely on TV at the moment (Oz is quite interesting too from the few episodes I’ve watched). It is a fun, trippy ride that provides some fanciful escapism for any fan of adventure. The characters have rich back-stories, which in effect shape their behavioural patterns and relationships with the other castaways. The story splendidly tweaks the audience’s emotions and covers a lot of sensitive material behind the veneer of mystery and weirdness that encapsulates the island and its inhabitants. So yeah, I like it a lot, but it’s no where near greatest of all time. Oh, and I prefer 24…..but we’re not up to season 4 here yet

Face it, a lot of stuff on that show isn't normal. And that's because we have no idea what's really going on. That's the whole point. Someone being resuscitated through brutal CPR is one of the least surprising things that have taken place so far on the show. Only up to episode 11? Let me assure you that... well, things happen. You'll see. Quote:

Agreed. I did miss the episode where Soyer was tortured though. I realy wish I caught that one because it looks to have been one of the better episodes. I hope this show last a long time but stays fresh the whole way throughout. SPOILER FOR ANYONE BEHIND ON EPISODES Sure hope they dont kill off Loke. I see him going crazy and starting to kill people. I think hes probably the most interesting characer.

The problem with that particular scene is that it goes against the whole ethos of the show. As you said, the show prides itself on being crazy and ludicrous, and it makes sure that "we have no idea what's really going on". I thought that that particular scene would could have been a fantastic change for the show to reaffirm it's vision. Letting Charlie die would have been a marked break from television convention, and something entirely unexpected. Instead they stupidly brought him back, which is something I'm sure we all expected. Instead, the show compromised its intent in favour of convention, and Charlie lives on. Yes, the polar bear and the plane crash itself were not realistic. That though is exactly what I am saying. One has to suspend their disbelief. I was willing to forgive reality for a moment to see where they were going. In the case of Charlie, the show not only compromised its vision, but it did it in a messy and just plane dumb manner. In addition, I don't claim to be good at spotting clues or guessing endings, but Lost flags the ending to each episode. It is not within my realm of expectation to have an ending that is completely unexpected each week, but I have been able to easily predict what will happen before a few of the endings. This doesn't necessarily mean I don't like the show or the endings, but the show is far more conventional and formulaic then the wackiness of the island lets on. I argue that it is a very good show- one of the best on TV. However, it is not as unique or ingenious as it lets on. EDIT: Exaggerated that Lost gives away "every" ending. It flagged a few. |
