Re: Star Trek: The New Movie
This movie kills all the other star treks for special effects. Great opening numbers. If they're going to do a sequel they need to write a stronger script.
I put this movie in the middle of all 11 star trek movies in rankings... 1. the wrath of khan (st II) 2. the undiscovered country (st VI) 3. the search for spock (st III) 4. the current reboot (st XI) 5. the voyage home (st IV) 6. first contact (st VIII) 7. generations (st VII) 8. the motion picture (st I) And then the three really crappy movies... 9. nemesis (st X) 10. the final frontier (st V) 11. insurrection (st IX)

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie
Just got back from a nice private screening with some friends at the theatre. Fantastic movie. There are certain movies where you have to be a real ******* to not like it. This is one of those movies. Everyone was great in it. The CG was awesome.
J.J. Abrams is pure gold. The man simply knows how to entertain.

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie
I didn't know J.J has only directed two big movies in MI: III and Star Trek.

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie
I'm pretty sure he did Cloverfield too.

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie
I saw this on the IMAX and it was fan-freaking-tastic. There was a great crowd too as people clapped when the characters first said their signature lines followed by a deserving reception at the end of the film.
This movie was epic and shows how powerful a franchise can be in the right hands. Its quality easily exceeded the enitre Star Wars Prequel trilogy (and I was born and raised on Star Wars and more of a TNG than a TOS fan) and exceeded my high expectations since I heard nothing but good things about it. The new Star Trek set the bar pretty high and if any sequels are made that aren't directed by JJ Abrams it probably won't be anywhere near as good.

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie
I feel really weird being basically the only person on the planet that didn't like this movie. The acting was good, sure, but the storyline was forgettable, the villain was underdeveloped and uninteresting, the alternate timeline concept was needlessly complicated (especially given that it was covering plot material that hadn't yet been covered anyway)... I just don't really get all the hype.

I thought the acting was cheesey. The storyline and script was cheesey too. Very cliche scenes. The only thing good about it was the special effects and graphics which made X-Men seem amateurish. The casting for the doctor and scottie was good. I also loved that of the whole 10 people that were in the theatre, there was one drunk b-------- sitting behind me who would laugh at anything. Literally. I began screaming hilarious! after everytime she laughed for a good 10 minutes until it became clear she was plastered. I stopped. She didn't.

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie
It's entertaining, but it just isn't a very good movie.

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie
In what way? It was well acted, well paced, good dialogue, and was shot beautifully. What's the beef?
I'm sensing the same kind of backlash that happened with The Dark Knight. For some reason, some people just cannot accept mass liking.

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie
And if a movie is extremely entertaining, and not in a "this is so bad it's good" way, then how is that not a good movie?

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie
I question people's understanding of "good" in film if they thought this wasn't it. This is exactly the type of sci-fi movie pretty much every nerd wants to make and it actually had mass appeal due to, well, essentially everything about it being good or great.
