Because it would have been lame, that's why. The fact that we walk into a science fiction movie prepared to make a very specific set of concessions (spaceships exist, matter transport is possible, faster-than-light travel is possible, etc) doesn't mean we're prepared to concede anything.
Right, there is a certain line you can't cross. I wouldn't say this movie crossed any of them and I haven't seen anyone come up with anything glaringly bad in this movie like randomly sprouting wings.

Actually I mostly agree with you, I'm not as bothered by random plot coincidences like that as some other people around here. I do vaguely object to the idea that a parallel universe would have ended up with almost the exact same result... George Kirk's son being named James Tiberius, growing up in Iowa, entering Starfleet, and rising to the captaincy of a ship called Enterprise, with Spock as his first officer, McCoy as the ship's physician, etc... but none of these are dealbreakers.

I thought this movie was awesome but I can't deny that this coincidence is pretty out there. Still doesn't hurt the movie at all in my eyes.

right I mean what are the odds that spoc would be chilling near the federation outpost, the very same outpost young spoc planned for kirk to be picked up. He was dropped 13 km from the outpost. Those odds aren't exactly slim

You guys are just trying to find fault in the movie for whatever reason.

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie

Ok, so I just saw it last night...Great movie and Im not usually into this type of movie....but I must say...

SLIGHT SPOILER!

Towards the end of the movie when Spock is in the space craft from the future he goes into warp speed to get away from the bad guys (forget name). The bad guys say "Hes gone into warp speed", the captain replies " Go after him"...all I could think of was the Spaceballs scene:

Colonel Sandurz: They must have hyperjets on that thing.
Dark Helmet: And what do we have on this thing? A cuisinart?

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie

This was a very fun movie, but it's also a movie you shouldn't think too much about and just enjoy it.

There's a lot of explaining, and overall there's a lot more flash than substance. That being said I really enjoyed the movie and it felt more like a summer blockbuster than a Star Trek movie for better or for worse. I feel it did an effective job setting the table for the reboot but now the question is whether or not Abrams is capable of following this up.

You don't need to worry until they've gone plaid.

Light speed's too slow, we'll have to go to Ludicrous speed.

Re: Star Trek: The New Movie

Joshua Jackson actually auditioned for Kirk and Bones:

Quote:
I had gone out for Star Trek. I had gone and auditioned for both Kirk and Bones and maybe that was the thing that put me into their mind. Knowing J.J. peripherally long before that -- I am really close friends with a guy named Scott Foley, who was in Felicity -- so I just happened to be there right around the beginning of J.J.'s TV career. I'd known him off and on through all those years so I think maybe he already had a pretty good idea of who I was.
I actually don't see him as a good fit for either of those roles. Glad J.J. made the right choices, instead.

Kirk and Bones were both cast perfectly in my mind. I never would have thought Urban for McCoy but he plays the role perfectly.
