Maybe we saw different trailers. The blue guys, which I believe are the main characters in the film, looked second rate at best.

I think maybe we did. I don't think the skin is meant to look human but rather like lizards mixed with I don't know (like the Hollywood rendition of the front half of a centaur)

What does 'Avatar' mean? I thought it was he little profile picture we all have, what a dull film that would be.

Watched the trailer and it looked like a cross between 'Final Fantasy' + 'Smurfs' + 'Starship Troopers'

It's meant to look real, though, which it most certainly doesn't. That's what I'm talking about. When CGI looks like CGI, it's not a good thing.

Basically, Avatar has been pimped up to be this earth-shattering change in cinema, it has cost over $300 million, and from the looks of it, District 9 did more with less than 1/10th of the budget.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I think that the SFX look real while I may have some reservations of how the whole movie will come out as I have no idea of the storyline. The facial features do look like they are real creatures. I don't see how the don't. The musculature of the facial twitches mimic that of a human who has had damage to CN7. Now they don't look 'normal' probably because they aren't meant to look normal. I don't know. The creatures looked real. I'll have to see them blown up on the big screen before I make a definitive judgement on that one.

if this wasn't a JC flick, would there be even close to 2 pages of buzz for a movie that comes out months from now, let alone the trailer

Any movie that has been in development for 4 to 5 years and cost 300 mill to make would definitely generate buzz. Heck any movie that cost over 200 mill to make will have some buzz, people wanna know why any movie should cost that much.

I actually want to see this in an IMAX theatre just to see how immersed I will be in the movie or so they say.

Pretty much any shot with the blue guys looks cartoonish. If you honestly can't see someone's argument there (and as is evident in this thread, I'm not the only one seeing this), you are probably wearing more than just 3D glasses.

At best, they look like cut-scenes from a video game.

By the way, word from the East Coast and foreign lands is pretty bad for "Avatar Day" screenings. Apparently, most of the theaters were only a half or quarter full, despite being "sold out." Yikes. In addition to the not-so-hot reaction to the trailer, there's a lot of work to be done. This is not the type of buzz you want for a $300+ million movie.
