Ugh, now I REALLY don't want to see this movie. That World Series inter-cutting was embarrassing.

re: "Avatar" Movie discussion

Let's get serious for a second. There is no way this movie doesn't take in considerably more than what it cost to make.

The tone of this thread is pretty strange.

It sounds like some people were latching onto this as the next big movie they can think about when they masturbate and now they are spitting venom at it because it's different than they fantasized about.

Transformers 2 made 400 million domestic and it is terrible. People will pay for big special effects violence, and they will pay for anything that looks "epic". This is both.

If the movie is even a little good it's not going to have any problem getting 400 million, which by the way, is something nobody seems to be talking about - the prospect that it might actually be good. I have no idea if it will be. It looks like a cross between Pocahontas and Return of the Jedi. James Cameron has a pretty good track record, but it's not like he didn't make True Lies.

I think the special effect look fantastic, with the possible exception of the aliens, which are more confusing than anything. I mean, they are 10 feet tall and blue, so of course they don't look realistic. Have you ever seen a picture of Sun Ming Ming? He doesn't look realistic either. They are awkward to look at in the trailer, but I suspect once you get used to them in the movie it will be fine.

I liked the full trailer a lot more than the teaser.

re: "Avatar" Movie discussion

So apparently 20th Century Fox is not getting the response they wanted or had expected from the supposed demographic of Avatar fans (I assume the demographic is of the 18-35 male age range but who knows), so they've started trying even harder to market this to younger audiences as well now (so I assume there is a higher chance for a PG rating than before, but I still think it gets a PG-13 rating).

So with that...

...we get this...

Awesome. This is almost as funny as this...

I'm still going to watch this film, but the marketing for it has been hilarious.

Oh my.

Anyways, the studio is trying to tell people that this movie only cost about $230M to make, but anyone who has a clue is positive that with advertising and the like, the budget easily tops $500M.

re: "Avatar" Movie discussion

It was broken down, yes it runs into $500 mill, but 20th century Fox really doesn't have that much invested in it. I think they are responsible for world wide advertising, but if the movie flops, they are not losing a ton of money.

$300 million in advertising?!?! Are you crazy?!?

Oh and Spielberg says that this movie is going to be the biggest live action 3D film ever.

No man, not $300M in advertising. That $230M number from the studio is just through and through bull****.

twelve years ago titanic cost more than $200 million. What does it matter? We all know this movie will become a top 25 earner of all time and that means it will gross more than $700million. Definitely so after looking at what is coming out this December. The only thing that would remotely compete with Avatar is Sherlock Holmes, which will be a steaming pile of garbage. At minimum it will gross $400m domestic and $500m worldwide. I can't see how a movie of this magnitude won't get people into the theaters to see the biggest 3D live action movie ever. Knowing Cameron's work, there will also be a plot and storyline to move the film forward. So, we have crazy SFX, storyline, and plot. Transformers made >$1500m with SFX alone.

Wow you sure have lofty expectations for it. I am thinking $300 mill, conservative estimate, but if it does Hyperion's numbers, Cameron is going t be seriously rich.

Cameron is seriously rich, because every movie he has ever made has been seriously successful. I seriously don't expect AVATAR to be any different.
