Really? That's your problem with the story. Not the fact that aliens attacked us with incredibly advanced weapons and we defeated them by installing a virus using Mac OS 7, but the timing?

Do you hate Die Hard for the sequel also being a Christmas terrorist attack? Anyways, I'm pretty sure they're just going to keep the franchise name and that's about it for its relevancy towards July 4th.

re: Independence Day Sequel

Bill Pullman says Independence Day 2 could go with or without Will Smith.

Quote:
While at a party thrown by the Television Critics Association, Pullman was asked about director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin's schedule for Independence Day 2.

Quote:
"Within a year, yeah, something like that I guess," Pullman said. "I worried about taking this part [on 1600 Penn] because it's heating up. I thought, 'I don't know if I should do the comedy' and I talked to Dean and Roland and they said, "No, do it. We'll work around it. If it goes, we'll work around it."
They're also open to working around Will Smith's schedule. His breakout role as Capt. Steven Hiller is synonymous with the original film. The actor's expressed interest in returning, but if he doesn't, they have a contingency plan.

Quote:
"The Will Smith part of it may be ongoing but I think there's strategies for both. I like what I have to do in both of them. I'm not in an old age home in a wheelchair being wheeled out for one more moment. It's a very interesting conception of what happens to Whitmore between then and when it picks back up."
This movie would instantly triple in flop potential if Smith isn't in the cast.

Re: Independence Day Sequel

Independence Day sequel officially a go, will open on original film's 20th anniversary

Deadline reports 20th Century Fox has given the currently untitled Independence Day sequel (rumored title: ID: Forever) a green light, with an eye to start production in May 2015. The studio is now entering negotiations with Emmerich to sign him on as director. Remember, original star Will Smith is most likely not returning, so the casting process will reportedly kick off in the weeks and months after Emmerich is locked.

Re: Independence Day Sequel

The Independence Day sequel has found its new star

Quote:
Congratulations are in order. After searching high and low, Roland Emmerich's finally found an actor to fill WIll Smith's shoes. Instead of casting another superstar, the director's tapped an up-and-comer. Independence Day 2 will keep it in the family as it shifts focus from Smith's character, Steven Hiller, to his adult son.

The coveted role will be filled by Survivor's Remorse star Jessie Usher. The actor currently headlines the scripted basketball series, which is approaching its second season. The Independence Day sequel will be his first blockbuster credit. Most of Usher's resume includes guest spots on TV shows such as Criminal Minds, The Mentalist and Level Up.
Also...

Quote:
Aside from Usher, two more stars have been confirmed for the long-awaited sequel. Hunger Games alum Liam Hemsworth has also joined the cast, although there are no details on his character. He'll be joined by ID4 veteran Jeff Goldblum, who'll reprise his role as David Levinson from the previous film.

Independence Day 2 is scheduled to hit theaters June 20, 2016.
Good info.

Re: Independence Day Sequel

Roland Emmerich's Independence Day sequel just elected a new president

Entertainment Weekly reports veteran actress Sela Ward (The Day After Tomorrow, Gone Girl) will portray new President Lanford in the film, taking over for Bill Pullman’s iconic Thomas J. Whitmore, last seen in the 1996 original. Pullman will be back for the film, but he apparently won’t be hanging out in the Oval Office (or what’s left of it, anyway).
