Re: The Hobbit

As much as I love the Batman franchise, my excitement is very much in the direction of The Hobbit > Dark Knight Rises.

I guess there's just that nostalgiac factor about watching these characters on the big screen again.

Re: The Hobbit

They didn't cast Chris Lee as Smaug even though he wanted to play him? That makes me sad. I guess they didn't want him to play two roles but it sucks his one role is probably going to be short and unnecessary.

You wouldn't find it odd that you would hear Saruman's voice when Smaug is talking?

He's playing a dragon. He would surely act in a different voice. It's not like he would use his normal speaking voice.

Still, you would hear a hint of Saruman's voice in there.

Saruman is involved in a side-story that is only implicated at in The Hobbit. I won't go into details, but reading about it leads me to believe that his role in this movie will be more than just an unnecessary cameo (ala Frodo and Legolas).

EDIT: Trailer looks great! Can't wait.

Re: The Hobbit

Love the trailer! Really liked how Thorin looked.

Okay I'll admit my Tolkien nerdom here.

Here is my pet Hobbit theory:

So remember that black arrow that Bard uses to slay Smaug? I believe that it is a shard from Gurthang, the sword of Turin Turambar. Gurthang was one of the most powerful artifacts of the 1st Age. It was forged by Eol, the dark elf, from a black meteorite. Turin, perhaps the most tragic Tolkien character, uses the sword to slay Glaurung, the first dragon. Glaurung's final words cause Turin to ask Gurthang if it will take his life. "And from the blade rang a cold voice in answer: 'Yes, I will drink thy blood gladly, that so I may forget the blood of Beleg my master, and the blood of Brandir slain unjustly. I will slay thee swiftly.'" Gurthang shatters when Turin uses it to commit suicide.

I admit it's hardly conclusive, but they are both colored black which is unusual. And the sword did shatter. And I think Tolkien would have appreciated the symmetry that the first and last dragons were killed with the same weapon.

Jackson also chats a bit about his take on the film, and says he's pulling from a variety of Tolkien sources to enrich the story. In addition to the main books, Tolkien famously wrote tons of history and background tales from his fictional universe. Jackson explains:

"In the movie we want these characters to have story lines and a little more substance than they do in the book. Almost everything we're doing is from Tolkien somewhere, whether it's in the book or the subsequent development that wasn't published in The Hobbit itself."

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens Dec. 14, while The Hobbit: There and Back Again is set for release Dec. 13, 2013.

Re: The Hobbit

Has Peter Jackson convinced Warners to go ahead with a 3rd Hobbit?

Quote:
Jackson, who put together the stellar Lord of the Rings trilogy, seems excited to be playing in Middle-earth again—and believes there's more than enough story to tell, once you factor in all of Tolkien's reference and tie-in works.

The Hobbit trilogy isn't a done deal yet, but if Jackson thinks they can get another movie out of this deal, you'd have to think Warners would oblige.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes out Dec. 14, while sequel There and Back Again opens Dec. 13, 2013. If it turns into a trilogy, common sense says it'll likely come in December 2014.

Re: The Hobbit

Underwhelmed by the trailer. Too nerdy, and the Gollum reveal at the end just didn't feel as great as it should have.

Re: The Hobbit

The making of a Hobbit trilogy is confirmed. Sounds like a bad idea to me. Either they're going to stretch one book across three movies or they introduce a ton of stuff that's not even in the book, neither of which seems ideal. But for now I'll keep a guarded optimism because it's Jackson.
