Maybe I'm biased, but what about Sam Rockwell as The Riddler? If Nolan is going to continue his darker, more sinister Batman villian mythos and not make The Riddler as light and campy as in cartoons/movies past, than I think Rockwell fits that mold. Dude just has that cunning evilness in his smile. See: The Green Mile.

Jude Law might work too. His robot character in A.I. has some very Riddleresque inherent strangeness and draw to him. And his character in Road to Perdition although nothing like the Riddler, proves he can work as that dark, evil eccentric Nolan is probably going for.

Or what about a Bale/Nolan/Jackman reunion? Although I think the Jackman suggestion is strictly a choice based on natural charisma, maybe he's not the best way to go about reinventing the Riddler, as I'm sure they want to do.

I still say your picks are more likely/plausible/fitting, but just throwing these guys into the mix for sake of discussion.

I guess Nolan is going to approach this the same way he did in between Begins and Dark Knight, where he went away for the franchise for a moment to do The Prestige. He's doing some sci-fi flick with DiCaprio, which is great in my opinion. The Batman fanboys were furious, but that's because they wanted Nolan constrained to this franchise 24/7 (which I find ironic since these are the same people begging for high quality Batman movies, but don't have the patience to let Nolan's creative process unfold), while most others I think just appreciate any Nolan project. When I heard he was doing a sci-fi film I was stoked. Nolan and sci-fi is just friggin' beautiful.

Like Law and Rockwell, lukewarm on Jackman. I don't think he'd work, and I don't think he'd be able to do the movie.

I have always thought Phillip Seymour Hoffman was meant to be the Penguin. Great actor, and body type certainly work.

As for the Riddler, I would have to go with Depp. With how involved he gets with these kinds of roles, he would be almost a sure lock for giving his a masterful performance as the Riddler. No brainer.

Agreed with PSH and Depp.

I think Rachel McAdams has the figure and slyness about her, but casting her as a main supporting role in the next Batman film, I'm not so sure about.

I could possibly see Elijah in this role. I think he is a decent actor, but I have never seen him do a real dark role(excluding Sin City, since he didn't have any lines in his part).

sam rockwell is a great pick for riddler imo.. gosling is probably my favorite actor right now but i dont see him as being a good fit for that role. Emerson though is a fantastic fit. as for penguin Viggo and Hoffman are excellent choices.

interesting picks jmk.

viggo would be really interesting as the penguin. viggo has a great restraint as an actor which, i think, will be key for the next villain to succeed. any other "crazy" villain in this franchise is destined to pale in comparison to ledger.

i would be pretty disappointed if johnny depp was in the next one tho.

rockwell is another interesting pick but i think i have problems with him as a villain for the same reasons i have problems with depp. they both have this certain charm that is unmutable. if you look at the batman villains

ras->psychotic idealist [ends justify the means, yadda yadda]
joker->psychotic anti-idealist [neither the ends nor the means require any justification, yadda yadda]

i think for the next one to work they need to go in yet another direction with the villain. that is why i like the viggo as penguin idea so much. just a cold, calculating villain who isn't driven by some idea or concept or insanity, but more a throwback to what bruce intended to fight when he created batman, ... that is greedy violent criminals who corrupt society ... but on a much greater scale.

a catwoman could work because she could be fueled by personal vendetta which would clash greatly with batman's sort of obsessive idealism & it would present the issue of having to deal with these 'crazy' criminals batman has essentially created as well as disciplined criminal empires that have raised the stakes.

so i guess what i'm getting at moreso is that i have a problem with the idea of the riddler being a villain, unless it was a smaller scare-crow-esque thing. in a smaller part rockwell would be a perfect fit, perhaps.

eh i'm losing my train of thought here.

Yeah, that's a great way to look at it that I didn't even think about, in relation to the first two films and the entire franchise as a whole. The Penguin is probably the best way to go about this whole thing.

I still say The Clock King from Batman: The Animates Series is my favorite villain to go with for part three, but I know he's too obscure and understated to even get a shot. Hell, all the dude is is a time efficiency genius.
