Battlestar: Blood and Chrome to debut as web series Nov. 9

The series will first roll out as a 10-episode web series on Machinima, broken up into 7-12 minute installments. If Machinima sound familiar, it should, as it was also home to the epic Mortal Kombat web series Legacy. The first episode goes live late this week on Friday, Nov. 9, with the rest breaking out over the next four weeks.

But that's not all.

A two-hour movie version of Blood and Chrome will also air on Syfy in early 2013, followed by an unrated DVD release that will hit shelves soon after that.

Well, there you have it. Finally, some confirmation.

Story-wise, the webisodes will follow young William Adama (Luke Pasqualino) during the first Cylon war. Young Adama will serve on the top-of-the-line (at the time) Battlestar Galactica, where he butts head with his co-pilot officer Coker (Ben Cotton).

Galactica looks so new and spiffy. Now I fully understand why Adama always had a special relationship with Starbuck that went beyond the bounds of his own son's life. Young Bill Adama and young Kara Thrace have quite a lot in common.

I had a feeling it'd be more along the lines of the milk run unexpectedly taking a turn. Nice swerve with the new orders. I watched all of BSG back in the fall of last year, around this time.

Happy to have some new BSG in my life. Need to watch Caprica though. :P

Caprica had a completely different vibe to it, but I liked it even more than BSG in a way.

Meet the guy who's filling Olmos' Adama shoes in Blood & Chrome

In order to get caught up with the Battlestar Galactica of it all, Pasqualino watched both seasons of Caprica, did a lot of research and was put in touch with Olmos. "We were emailing backwards and forwards, so he was giving me a bit of help. So just trying to get different pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together, little bits here and there, and then just trying to put something together and make it fit, really. But I didn't really go on to watch Edward James Olmos' work, just because that's all set in the future and I didn't want his performance to affect my representation of the material," he said.

So what advice did the Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning actor give Pasqualino?

"I think he knew where I was coming from and he didn't want to direct me in that kind of way. He didn't want me to be him. I think he knew that as an actor I had to bring my own element to it. But he was just really supportive. He said to just go in, have fun, and all that kind of stuff," said Pasqualino. "It was great. It was brilliant. He was very supportive. He was a gentleman, really. Really helped me out. Just gave me the confidence to go in there and attack every line with the conviction of knowing who your character is. So that was pretty much it. It was a great help."

Sounds like he's treating the role with the right amount of respect.

Not a rejected series

It was never intended to be a traditional pilot, so to speak, such that Syfy not picking it up in a traditional manner to an episodic series was some kind of a rejection or failure. It was always developed, at least from my point of view, as a project for an online environment. Something that we would develop and structurally, narratively build as a ten-part sort of a series, kind of like the Raiders of the Lost Ark-style, the 1930s style movie serials, where you have ten minutes of story and a cliffhanger, followed by ten minutes of story and the cliffhanger. And then after ten of these episodes, it would all resolve itself in a three-act structure as a whole movie."

It has that feel so far.
