Doctor Strange

The long talked-about Dr. Strange movie looks like it's getting the green light.

Marvel has drafted a short list of directors to approach on the title and is forwarding the current script to each to try and sign someone up to 'oversee continued development'.

You can read that 'continued development' comment a couple ways. Either Marvel is basically happy with the draft that they have now but want to give the eventual director a chance to make their mark on it before considering things locked down or they are looking for a director who can also re-tool the script from the ground up.
He's definitely one of my personal favorite Marvel characters. His villains just always seem difficult to translate on screen. I hope this one doesn't get the Electra treatment.

Re: Doctor Strange

Marvel nearly made a Doctor Strange movie 20 years ago.

Quote:
You know, I did [have the desire to make a superhero movie], but I could again. I was a huge comic book fan growing up, within reason. I was a fan of Spider-Man and all that stuff. Actually, I met Stan Lee 15 or 20 years ago when Marvel had the worst reputation for their adaptations. They had made a really terrible 'Fantastic Four' movie and some other things. I met him with my dad and we said, 'Oh, wow, I wish we could be involved. How great would it be to make a really accurate version of one of these films?' I had the aspirations to make a 'Doctor Strange' movie, which I worked on quite a bit. I ended up coming out on the other side, since I told someone I was working on a comic book movie and they said, 'Do you really want to work for a studio to get pushed around for three years and not make something that's personal?' To make a movie like that where I could really use my sensibility would be fantastic. That type of work now is a product, and there's a manner in which it's made. Now I think it'd be better to spend those three years to do something better.
From an interview with Francis Ford Coppola.

Re: Doctor Strange

Probably for the best, but FFC directing a comic book movie would have been interesting to say the least.

New Evil Dead director up for Doctor Strange

Quote:
Fede Alvarez, the man responsible for the gore-tastic reimagining of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead, is reportedly in talks with Marvel about the mystical project. Doctor Strange is a major part of Phase 3, and after Guardians of the Galaxy, will mark Marvel’s continued foray into the deeper comic catalog.

Re: Doctor Strange

Feige explains how Dr. Strange's magic fits Marvel's movie universe:

Quote:
For Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, it starts with the same principle introduced in Thor: On some level, magic and science are still the same thing.

"Are you watching the Cosmos series? That’s magic, [the quantum physics]. It’s unbelievable," Feige said, speaking to Badass Digest during the Captain America: The Winter Soldier press junket. "If somebody knew how to tap into that stuff, what’s the difference between that and magic?

"You don’t get into it in Harry Potter, but if a scientist went to Hogwarts he’d find out how some of that stuff is happening!"

The idea that Strange is a guy who can tap into aspects of the universe that other people simply can't is certainly in keeping with his character. After all, he doees things that even supergeniuses like Reed Richards and Tony Stark don't fully understand. But how do you reconcile the idea that what Strange is doing is just really advanced science with all of his amulets and rituals and astral wonderings? According to Feige, the answer to that is actually rather simple: Never explain everything.

"We’re not going to spend a lot of time on that, but there will be some of that," Feige said. "And particularly for a character like Strange, who goes from a man of science to a man of faith and who traverses both worlds. And sometimes there won’t be an answer! Sometimes he’ll want an answer - 'How is this happening?!' - and nothing."

http://www.mstarz.com/articles/26229...e-included.htm

Found this article, nothing but a report from a guy named Victor Jones, says Dr. Strange is "absolutely certain" to be a part of Marvel's phase 3

Quote:
"The movies that will be part of Phase III for absolute certain are: Ant-Man, Captain America 3, Thor 3, The Avengers 3 and Dr. Strange."
