Abrams shot the movie in 2D and is now adding the 3D elements in post production.

In fact, we're doing a bunch of things with the 3D in this movie that have not been done before, using techniques that have not been seen. All the exterior shots, including the shots in space, are all either shot or rendered in IMAX format. It's the first time a movie has been shot in IMAX to this scale and converted to 3D.

I wonder if we'll notice the difference.

Revised synopsis sheds new light on Star Trek Into Darkness plot.

In the wake of a shocking act of terror from within their own organization, the crew of The Enterprise is called back home to Earth. In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Kirk with a personal score to settle has always proven fun to watch.

First, he delves a little more into the story and the villain, John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch):

"...he is sort of an average—that is what makes him so scary—he is just an average guy who works in an organization called Starfleet, and he turns against the group because he has got this back-story and this kind of amazing secret agenda. After two very violent attacks, one in London and one in the U.S., our characters have to go after this guy and apprehend him. And it is a far more complicated and difficult thing then they ever anticipated. Into Darkness is very much about how intense it gets and really what they are up against."

Seems grounded and less fantastical. I like that concept, in theory.

Then he goes on to say that he won't leave his cast stranded in a black hole of misery and tragedy at the end of the movie:

"I don't like going to the movies to feel bad. I don't like going to the movies to feel depressed and feel diminished. The reason you go to the movies is to feel bigger and stronger and happier. So this is a movie that they certainly go Into Darkness, but I would be the wrong director if it was about characters staying there. This is very much a movie about hope, about love, about romance, and about facing something that is truly terrifying and finding a way through the connection of your family and surviving and being stronger afterwards."

He goes from giving away absolutely nothing to possibly telling too much.

Co-writer Damon Lindelof recently did a long interview with Collider.

"We've been talking about this a lot and I think that certainly the marketing materials and the title of the movie are selling this idea of a darker Trek, but hopefully especially for the people who have seen the first nine minutes- a totally dark Trek is not Trek," he said.

"And I think that one of the things that the best iterations of Trek, whether it was episodes show or the movies that were highly successful, is that they were able to find a blend of those two things where the stakes were monumentally life or death but there were still moments of great humor."

"Did we want to do The Voyage Home? That is largely a comedic, fish out of water movie. No pun intended, a whale out of water movie. With strong comedy elements, but the stakes were saving the future, but the mechanics of the movies was that there was a lot of funny. No, we wanted to do a very serious movie. But when you look at the first movie you go, O.K. the opening of the movie is that Kirk's father dies and then the next sequence of events is basically a run up to Vulcan being destroyed and the fundamental aftermath of Vulcan being destroyed. All of that stuff seems pretty dark to me and so I don't feel like the first movie was necessarily light and frothy and I don't feel that this movie abberates significantly from the first movie in terms of its own level of self-importance. It's still Trek."

"I think that the ways that the characters relate to each other, even in times of immense stress can be humorous because several of them, particularly Bones, use humor as a coping mechanism for dealing with those immense stresses. There were multiple times where we thought of something funny for someone to say and we were like that's just not going to play in this moment. And then the actor would say let me try it and see if I can sell it. And we're in the editing process now, so some of those jokes will live and some of them will die and some of them will be available on the Blu-ray and DVD. Finding the balance has been important for us. I don't think anybody wants to see a dour Star Trek movie."

Interesting stuff.

There was a 10-minute extended preview shown prior to my watching The Hobbit in IMAX the other day. It definitely seems like it will be as good as the first movie, if not better.
