Disagree. 1 and 3 were classics to me, but 2 was merely good. Definitely a strong trilogy, but I do think that 2 doesn't hold up with the other two.

Granted, I haven't watched it since I was a kid. This thread is making me want to rewatch it.

Short Cuts was one of the only movies that legitimately made me tear up.

But have you seen Powder? I definitely cried near the end of that movie.

Post Tier 4: (Movies 44 thru 60)

60) Howards End - Besides featuring career-defining performances from both Helena Bonham Carter and Emma Thompson, this movie tackles the ever-important battle of money vs. power in early 1900's England in a creative way. The plot has a ton of twists and turns, but the screenplay never feels muddled or heavy-handed.

59) Magnolia - I opened the Paste Magazine list expecting not to see Magnolia. As I flipped through the countdown, I got more and more disappointed expecting to have to come in here and argue for its inclusion. Then when I saw it was third overall, I found myself in the strange position of having to argue AGAINST a movie that I really like. Sure it's got a good ensemble cast. Sure it's got Tom Cruise at his best. Sure it's got raining amphibians. But 3rd overall in the 90's?!?!? I don't think so. This feels like a much more appropriate spot.

58) Lone Star - More than just a murder mystery and more than just an exploration of race relations, this film has always been one of my favorite depictions of small town Texas life and of hard-nosed detective work.

57) A Bronx Tale - I think this crime drama was ranked a little too low in the OP list. It's a classic coming of age plot but done with style and panache.

56) The Lion King - When I first saw this Disney classic, I would've thought it would be their best movie ever, but it has not stood the test of time well. I watched it twice in the last two years, it's still good but doesn't quite hold its own with these others great films.

55) Aladdin - Ditto. I do give Aladdin the slight edge here, though, because Jafar is cooler than Scar and because Genie is cooler than Rafiki and Zazu combined.

54) Heat - The movie that brought together the two men that many people consider the best actors of the 90's. I loved their iconic showdown scene and various other dialogue-heavy scenes, but the slow-moving pace just nags at me a bit and keeps this excellent urban drama from being higher on this list.

53) The Player - One of two movies on this list that's primarily about what you can and can't get away with in Hollywood. Movies about movie-making are often pretentious, but this film manages to be witty, satirical, and playful while still doing a seriously good job handling the subject matter at hand.

52) The Ice Storm - Like Magnolia before it, I was expecting to have to argue for this movie's inclusion. Also like Magnolia, I think Paste Magazine had it too high... but only a little this time. Besides being my first exposure to the wonder that is the "key party," this Indy drama features a star-studded cast that successfully captures every bit of the awkwardness and uncertainty required by their situation. I like this movie a lot.

51) Office Space - Ah the dream of doing nothing... don't we all just wish we could do it this gracefully.

50) Boyz N Da Hood - This is what happens when you shoot the wrong dude...

49) Clueless - Whether you're a Barney or a Baldwin, a Betty or a full-on Monet, if you're not down with the dopeness of this flick, you must be buggin'.

48) Bottle Rocket - My fourth favorite Wes Anderson movie feels about right in this location on the list. The Wilson brothers busted onto the comedy landscape in a big way in this "heist" film where they seem incapable of pulling off even the most simple smash and grab job. They would not make the cut in Ocean's 11, 12, 13, or maybe even Ocean's 1,000.

47) A League of Their Own - There's no crying in 90's movie list-making. This is another must-have on any list of the top 90's movies. Who knew girls baseball could be this fun and endearing?

46) Out of Sight - This film is just bursting at the seems with chemistry between the leads. You've got to love the jailbreak scene, but it is quickly topped by the trunk scene that immediately follows.

45) Rushmore - My third favorite Wes Anderson movie turned out to fall not too far from my 4th on this particular list. This quirky little tale of the over-achiever who falls in love with the older woman is good... just not top 10 in the 90's good.

44) The Big Lebowski - I know I probably won't get any agreement from folks on this site, but Lebowski is just not consistent enough to be any higher on my list than this. This just seems like the spot where Donnie will feel most in his element.

I adamettly disagree with a lot of your placements here, but thanks for putting in all the effort. Constructing something like this certainly takes a ton of time and thought.

I don't expect agreement. I was looking to generate some discussion and hopefully some comparisons putting a couple movies up against each other like I have done for my own list. I probably won't get to the top 43 until tomorrow.

(that aside nice work and fun to read)

I love Aladdin, but I wouldn't put it over Lion King. I think you put Lebowski too low as well. Overall, as usual, I'm enjoying your input regardless.

Why not? Alladin was definitely funnier. The script was slightly less formulaic. Was it the animation you preferred in the Lion King?

Re: 90 Best Movies of the 90's

I'll concede that Aladdin was funnier, that's fair. But, I thought Simba's progression as the protagonist was more developed, I did like the animation better, and lions are ****ing cool, especially when the first time you watch the movie you're like 6.

Forrest Gump at 88 is ****ing stupid and I don't care what Forrest's Mama has to say about it.
