I like it. I'm looking into reading some of their stuff. I liked the characters involved in the Annihilation story arch. Also seems like a good way to tie Thanos to the Avengers.

Why Whedon thinks James Gunn will do right by Marvel's Guardians

So what makes Gunn the right man for the job? Whedon believes he has a fresh and "twisted take" on the characters.

"He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon. This is the guy who wrote The Specials, which is one of the most important movies. People don't understand how influential that movie was about heroes, about taking heroes and making them mundane," said Whedon.

"And [he directed] Super," he continued. "He's got a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love of the material. It's going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he's going to come from left field and I'm going to go, 'What?' And then, 'Of course, why didn't I think of that?' And then I'm going to beat him!"

Iron Man to cameo

Guardians of the Galaxy director blasted over sexist online poll

To his credit, James did poll fans extensively and made sure to include both fictional men and women on the list. He also took care to pay due credit to the artists who have made many of those characters popular. So far, so good.

Unfortunately, in addition to providing the list, Gunn also added his own, personal color commentary, and that, folks, is where we run into trouble. While this is the Internet and authorial intent can sometimes be lost, every online writer has to accept that there are consequences to what they choose to write. So maybe when Gunn referred to Gambit as a "cajun fruit" and said he hoped that Tony Stark "turned" Batwoman away from being a lesbian, he should have thought better. Or at least thrown in a "jk, LOL" at the bottom. Anything.

Instead, we get unabashed references to Gunn's penis all over the entire poll, not to mention the mocking of female superheroes for having sex, continually calling several of the male heroes "gay" in a derogatory fashion, and alluding to several of the women being forced to do lewd acts against their will.

So, naturally, someone on the Internet found the poll even though it was a year old and shared it on tumblr. From there, people immediately began to call for Gunn to be fired from Guardians of the Galaxy. Unsurprisingly, attempts were made to take the poll down, but the Internet is forever and Google cache ensured that the poll remained available to anyone who might want to peruse it.

Lesbians don't have a sense of humor. That should have been known from the getgo that he'd get a lot of shit from them for anything resembling a joke against their orientation

Not really, the worst offense of it was that it was insanely juvenile. However, it was a list of made up characters that people want to bang, in order. the part everyone was offended by was "turning" a lesbian. Then they all of a sudden equated it to him saying that she should be raped to be turned straight. Then all of us guys look at each other awkwardly not understanding how we got to rape and then bam! He promotes raping lesbians. When it he was merely saying that no woman can resist Stark's charms. Oh well, lesbians ruin something else that's fun.

Casting for the lead has begun.

There's also Tron: Legacy's Garrett Hedlund, who's no stranger to the Marvel casting process. He was also in the running for Captain America before Evans made a deal. Rounding out the list is Australian actor Sullivan Stapleton, who currently stars on Cinemax's Strike Back.

Just not James Marsden... please.

James Gunn apologizes for "attempted humor" of sexy superhero poll.

So it looks like this is still actually happening. Can't wait to see how they pull this one off.

Interesting possibilities. I have always defended Jim Carrey's performance as the Riddler. I think he could do a good job here.
