Some of these third sequels you're dismissing weren't that bad. The Godfather 3, Terminator.. at least, no one has said The Matrix.

The Lord of the Rings - first by a nose
Toy Story - each movie was better than the previous one
Bourne
The Vengeance Trilogy (Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance)
Hannibal Trilogy (Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal)
Indiana Jones

Those are the only ones that did not have a weak link. Here's my list for trilogies where one or two of the movies is not very good (IMO):

Godfather
Alien
Original Star Wars
X-Men
Back to the Future
Spider-Man
Star Wars Prequels
Matrix
Die Hard
Terminator
Blade
Scream
Mad Max
Pirates of the Caribbean
Austin Powers
Major League
Mighty Ducks

Back to the Future is Awesome... the third one didnt quite live up to the standards of the first two but was still a solid movie

and can we please stop throwing the mighty ducks out there.. shit if we are going to throw out trilogys that had a good starter followed by a pair of abortions lets throw Major League out there

I do not like Jedi very much. The Ewoks were not a good turn in the series for me.

Completely forgot that one. I would put Major League above the Mighty Ducks for sure.

Can't believe I forgot about Back to the Future. Those are some of my all time favorite movies.

Also Xmen and Pirates of the Caribbean would definitely be on my list too.

I've got to go with the Godfather - the first two are so much better than just about anything else we're talking about that the fact that the third one was kind of meh should be forgiven
