Re: Junior Seau found Dead
Chris Benoit will always win that award for me (for Most Shocking, that is)

Re: Junior Seau found Dead
Nooo - he said this was far from shocking, I meant that would always win my award for "Most Shocking" -- I guess I should have made that more clear in my lazy sentence

Re: Junior Seau found Dead
To clarify, I didn't mean it as any sort of ranking (and I know you didn't take it as such). There have been several reports and stories over the last few years about a variety of personal issues. He has done a lot of good for a lot of people, especially in the San Diego area.

Re: Junior Seau found Dead
This probably takes the safety debate to another level especially with him being inducted into the HOF coming up. You hate to say it but Goodell probably thought he could weather the storm with marginally memorable names but a legend who's going to be in highlight reels forever...there's going to have to be serious reform or within 20 years I don't know if you'll still have the quality of players you do now
I mean damn, the gift was the curse in the truest sense here. |

On one hand, they have done a ton to increase player safety in the last couple of years......but Seau's death really puts a face on the issue. I won't be surprised if the "Aaron Rodgers" helmet becomes mandatory this year.

Re: Junior Seau found Dead
The NFL is making great strides to improve the safety of the game and this death is probably going to unfairly take away from that. If current measures had been put in place 20 years ago, Junior may still be with us today.
The problem is obviously we can't wait another 15-20 years to find out just how effective the current changes have been.

He changed the way kick offs are, he lead the change in rules to protect defenseless receivers. Meanwhile people will keep saying he's turning the NFL into flag football. If anything I'd say he got out in front of this issue much more than you could reasonably expect a commissioner to do.

Re: Junior Seau found Dead
I think what the NFL is desperately trying to avoid is someone literally getting killed on the field. That's the real nightmare, you'd traumatize millions of people and God only knows how it would impact your industry. What Goodell has been trying to do is essential to the health of the sport. This stuff is cumulative, just like with Ali it is going to happen to guys who get hit repeatedly over long periods of time.
The only thing you can really do about it is to pour a lot of money into trying to design a helmet that would protect your brain a lot better, but that is only going to mitigate the effect so much. I guess they should be putting sensors on the players to find out what sort of force is being sustained and where.
