McNabb: Chances of [failed] return 80-90 percent

Quote:
Quarterback Donovan McNabb says there's "an 80 to 90 percent chance" he'll play this season.

"I do want to play," McNabb told "NBC SportsTalk" on Thursday. "The most important thing is I have about three teams I'm looking at. ... We won't name those three teams."

McNabb, 35, played six games with the Minnesota Vikings last season before being released and sitting out the rest of the season after failing to find another NFL employer. The former Eagles and Redskins quarterback said he is trying to train smarter in case there is any interest in his services for the 2012 season.

"I think teams are evaluating what they have. They are looking at their young quarterbacks, their backup situation. Obviously their starters they feel very confident in, but if things were to go wrong in training camp or maybe the competition isn't where they need it to be, they would obviously pick up the phone and call," he told "NBC SportsTalk." "Being an older player, I am focusing on strengthening my body as well as my mind."

McNabb said he's most interested in teams with a "solid running game, weapons on the outside, a defense that's been playing well and playing well together, and that's ready to win right now."

McNabb spent the 2010 season with the Redskins, where he was benched twice. The team finished 6-10, and McNabb later said coach Mike Shanahan "misused" him.

McNabb has passed for 37,276 yards and 234 touchdowns in 13 NFL seasons and led the Eagles to four NFC Championship Game appearances.

He told Fox Sports in April that he believes he is a Hall of Famer.

"Even these last two years, when people may look at it and say, 'Oh, he's done, or whatever.' I'm 34, 35 years old, but still, I played at the pinnacle, I played at the highest level of my career. I played there," McNabb told Fox Sports. "And I would vote for myself for the Hall of Fame."

I can't imagine why anyone would want to bring him in to do more than back up the guy with the clipboard. Dude hasn't done anything to make me think he can still play.

I've been a fan of McNabb for a long time, but at this point I think it's unlikely he'll get an opportunity to start again. Something tells me he could still probably play at a high level for a team that has a great offense around him, but that's unlikely. I felt like when he wasn't picked up by Chicago or Houston late last season, he was pretty much done. I hope by some miracle he does get an opportunity though just because I've always rooted for the guy.

To me McNabb was done after he left Philly.

McNabb is starting to embarrass himself.

Hang the cleats up and take that nice comfy job at NFL Network.

Shot himself in the foot with the Minnesota situation. If he just sat and held that clipboard he would've been much more attractive to sign as a backup.

It's funny that he basically explains that he wants to go somewhere with a perfect team around him. Good luck finding a team with all those things he's looking for while also being interested in him.

Re: McNabb: Chances of [failed] return 80-90 percent

If Jeff Garcia and Jake Delhomme got a job last year, I'm sure McNabb will be able to find one this year as well.

Re: McNabb: Chances of [failed] return 80-90 percent

It's not last year any longer and Delhomme has been better than McNabb recently. It looked like his arm strength was somewhat better in Cleveland and that was the reason he'd been so bad before. McNabb has been dreadful.

I disagree. McNabb's numbers have been much much better than people realize before last season. Delhomme's thrown 11 TDs and 25 INTs in the last three seasons combined. McNabb was a Pro Bowler in '09 and even threw 3,300+ yards in just 13 games with Washington before getting benched. Even last year he wasn't as bad as people think, he completed 60% of his throws and only threw two picks altogether, and that was with a very poor group of receivers outside of Percy Harvin. (I'm not saying he was overly impressive as a Viking, but he wasn't a complete disaster)

Like I've said before, if you put him in a decent situation with a good offense around him, I think he could still put up big numbers. He got screwed by his coaches the last two years who made him the scapegoat when in reality their offenses were just not that good. I'm not saying he's still a Top-15 caliber QB anymore, but he can still play. The numbers are there.
