Re: BBF Top 30 Players in NFL for 2012
Joe Thomas definitely deserved to be in the top 30, not sure how a negative article about Ryan Clady proves otherwise.

Re: BBF Top 30 Players in NFL for 2012
It's just interesting that a position that is deemed as one of the most important in football wouldn't have it's best players considered as among the top 30 in the league?

Re: BBF Top 30 Players in NFL for 2012
People haven't been putting as much stock into left tackles as they used to in recent years, and rightfully so. If Joe Thomas is so ****ing good, why does he not impact wins and losses at all? Why do the Browns always suck, and why has he "anchored" the 30th, 31st, 29th and 30th ranked offenses in the league the last 4 years? Don't get me wrong, he's a good tackle but having him as our 20th best player in the league is laughable at best. The NFL Network list had him at 82, I think that's closer to correct but I would go even lower. I'm sorry, the 20th best player in the league makes some sort of discernible difference in the game.
Joe Thomas is better than Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Ed Reed, Jimmy Graham, Clay Matthews and Troy Polamalu? That's a good one. |

Re: BBF Top 30 Players in NFL for 2012
Andre Johnson is way too low on this list. I know he's had his injury issues but he's arguably the best WR in the league.
Phillip Rivers had a terrible year, how did he make this list? I like him, don't get me wrong. But, he's not better than Big Ben. |

Re: BBF Top 30 Players in NFL for 2012
Phillip Rivers had the 20th best passing yardage season in NFL history last year and threw 27 touchdowns. Terrible for him, I guess, but not bad enough for me to significantly downgrade him.

Re: BBF Top 30 Players in NFL for 2012
Also, offensive lineman don't score. Unless they lineup as running back in a goalline set. So they don't have a role where they directly affect a win or loss.

Re: BBF Top 30 Players in NFL for 2012
So by your own admission, he's not directly affecting whether the team wins or loses but Joe Thomas is a top 20 player in the league? No he can't help the fact that Colt McCoy sucks, but he can give him more time to throw and he can open up holes for the running game. Why did the Browns have the 28th ranked rushing attack last year? Not to mention Thomas allowed more sacks and committed more penalties than Duane Brown and Jason Peters, guys who had great seasons and anchored good offenses with great rushing attacks. There's just so much that points to Thomas being grossly overrated by these rankings we did. Very good left tackle, probably a Top 100 overall player in the league but nowhere near 20th.

So if you're on a horrible team and you're a stud you aren't a great player. In a sport that is more team oriented than any other. Gotcha. If the argument is we have no way to really gauge offensive linemen and we should focus on players who have something we can quantify in the form of plays made. Fine. I get that. But that a LT is less valuable because he's on a horrible team and doesn't automatically improve their team into even an average offense is silly.

Re: BBF Top 30 Players in NFL for 2012
Yeah that's a good argument. We probably should have excluded OLs just because none of us are qualified to judge NFL offensive linemen, we're just basing this on All Pro teams and Outland trophies and things.

Re: BBF Top 30 Players in NFL for 2012
Well you can judge Linemen pretty easily, but usually only in a negative way. It's real easy to see when they suck. The difference between two great tackles is a lot more difficult to tell, especially because it depends so much on what is around them and what they are expected to do.
