Also MJD is being a bitch here. Dude is getting solid money these next two seasons and he wants a new deal? It'd be different if he was getting $750k. I can't clap to this. The deal he signed is comparable to some of the ones given out this offseason.
Not to mention his contract was frontloaded, so of course with that type of contract the longer it goes on the worse it looks. Agreeing to a contract structured in that manner and then holding out isn't exactly something I support either.

Hm. I thought they was denied and that the Jets offered more.

Yeah, I agree about the situation. Wonder if he's just doing it to get out.

I was under the impression they offered the same package but Tebow felt like the Jets wanted him whereas the Jags just felt obligated to make an offer to appease the people.

Re: Sources: Jags' RB Jones-Drew open to trade

In two years he's going to be 29 though. If he waits until then he's not getting his money, assuming he's still able to run the ball. It makes sense for him to hold out right now, because that's about the best way he can hope to maximize his earnings. His base pay next year is something like 4.5 and they probably only owe him about 10 total for the last 2 years of the deal. If he holds out the idea is that you get three or four times that much before the league wears you down and you end up on the scrap heap.

In my opinion the guy already earned the money on that deal. He's the only reason anyone would want to watch that team. I can't imagine how bad they'd have been without him.

But he signed a front loaded contract, that is inherently designed to make the front loaded with more cash and effectively lessening the amount dispersed in the expiring years. That's something his agent negotiated for, and something they accepted to for him. To turn around, after the bulk of your money has come in, and claim that your contract isn't up to snub is flat out greedy. MJD seems like a good guy from the interviews I've heard, he's super talented, and seems to be an extremely hard worker. I think he deserves to be paid, I just think he's mishandling the situation.

Re: Sources: Jags' RB Jones-Drew open to trade

You guys are right.
Quote:

On Wednesday, multiple reports indicated that the Broncos were allowing quarterback Tim Tebow to choose between the Jets and the Jaguars. After the trade went down, Tebow claimed otherwise.

In a late-night media conference call, Tebow said that he “didn’t have any [say]” in his destination, and that the Broncos had “all that power.”

Broncos V.P. of football operations John Elway begs to differ.

“There was more [offered] from Jacksonville, but I think that we looked at it and it was close enough, and we were in contact with Tim throughout the day, and talked to him,” Elway told ESPN Radio in Denver on Thursday, via Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post. “He knew what was going on the whole time. The reports that he was not involved are not accurate.”

Re: Sources: Jags' RB Jones-Drew open to trade

If he came back to the table wanting more next season fine... but the year after the front loading?! Nah.

Especially when you consider that $4.5 million as a base for a RB is really good money.

Re: Sources: Jags' RB Jones-Drew open to trade

I am only speaking to the financial logic. I don't really think morality has a lot to do with any of it. This is a billionaire and a millionaire arguing over a business transaction. Jones-Drew is trying to fix it so that he walks away from the NFL with as much money as he possibly can. That is assuming that he'll be able to walk away. He might just as easily go out on a gurney.

If he went out and got really badly hurt in the first week the Jags would cut him at the first opportunity to save the five million they owe him in the last year of that deal. How moral would that be? And why should morality enter into for Jones-Drew when the club is expected to take advantage of him if they can?

Re: Sources: Jags' RB Jones-Drew open to trade

Jones-Drew has a ton of carries on those legs and his 5 foot whatever body has taken a lot of hits over the last 5 years. He's not getting any younger and he's coming off a year where he easily led the league in rushing. We all know the average life of running backs, I don't blame him one bit for trying to get his. So far the Jags aren't budging, but I can't fault him for using whatever leverage he has as the face of the franchise and one of the best players in franchise history to secure his family for life.

Have the watched the Jets offense? The whole reason it sucks is because Shonn Greene sucks. That offense is built to run the ball and they have a guy that is nothing more then a situtional RB carrying the load

Re: Sources: Jags' RB Jones-Drew open to trade

So the Jets have a poor O line, two crap QB's and one competent receiver, but somehow Shonn Green is completely responsible for their offensive ineptitude?

Yeah, okay.

I think Mark Sanchez sucking has a bigger hand in the reason why the Jets offense is sorry.

1050 yards rushing and 4.2 yards per carry is nothing to write home about, but it puts him about middle of the league for starting RBs.

Tell me. What would the Jaguars incentive be to budge in this deal and give MJD a new contract?

Now he's doing this and losing money every day and they can take a prorated portion of his signing bonus back if this goes on long enough.

My whole point is Jets are a running team. For some reason Rex Ryan wants to be a running team. Replacing Shonn Greene will have alot more effect then replacing Sanchez
