Holmgren to retire as NFL OKs Browns sale

Quote:
New Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, whose takeover of the team was officially approved Tuesday, named Joe Banner the team's CEO/president and announced that current president Mike Holmgren will retire at the end of the season.

Haslam said Banner will start his new role effective Oct. 25 and Holmgren will help in the transition of the team's hierarchy.

Haslem also will close his deal to buy the Browns with Randy Lerner on Oct. 25.

Holmgren, the former head coach of the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, joined the Browns on Jan. 5, 2010. The 64-year-old Holmgren officially had the title of team president. He was instrumental in the hiring of current Browns head coach Pat Shurmur.

Haslam bought the team from Lerner for $1 billion, and the owners voted 32-0 Tuesday to approve the deal. Haslam, who built his fortune with Pilot Flying J truck stops, has been a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, but divested that stock to buy the Browns.

Haslam and Lerner agreed to the sale in August just as training camp was opening. Haslam has said his mission is to bring winning football back to Cleveland; the Browns have made the playoffs once since returning to the NFL in 1999.

Cleveland was the last team to win a game this season, improving to 1-5 with last Sunday's victory over Cincinnati.
The fate of Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert, both Holmgren hires, won't be determined until after the season, Haslam added.
Banner left the Eagles in June. He was with them since 1994 and was team president when he resigned.

The late Al Lerner, Randy's father, purchased the franchise from the NFL in 1998 for $530 million after the original Browns moved to Baltimore in 1996 and became the Ravens. The elder Lerner died in 2002.

The Browns made the playoffs in 2002 and lost to Pittsburgh in the first round. They've had only two winning records in 13 seasons.

About time. It's been all downhill since he took the Seahawks to the Super Bowl.

Cleveland was pretty terrible under him. About time.

Holmgren's conservative style of drafting will always disappoint you as a fan. He only goes for safe picks, so your team will miss out on a lot of playmakers. He's like Larry Brown. Being risk-adverse will work against you.
