I have no idea what happened to him, but he's just not a very good QB anymore. He makes what has to be the stupidest turnovers I've seen in a long, long time. Even when he starts off having an amazing game, you just know he'll blow it, and he did it that again yesterday to nobody's surprise. A couple of years ago, the guy was a legit elite quarterback. Now there's a lot of quarterbacks who are better than him. Is he finished? Does he still have something left, just not in SD? Should the Chargers get rid of him and start over? It pains me watching the Chargers who have always been so talented but can never put it all together for one season.

It doesn't help that Norv Turner is the coach down in San Diego, either. That's just mind boggling, really.

I feel like as he has stuck around with the Chargers, the players surrounding him on offense have gotten worse. From LT to Tolbert/Matthews. From Vincent Jackson to Malcom Floyd (who is not a #1 WR). The receivers behind Floyd are garbage. Sure they still have Gates, but there's only so much Gates can do. Rivers is also getting sacked 2.67 times per game too, so protection hasn't been the absolute best either.

Rivers has thrown a couple games away maybe, but I say they need to rebuild their offense around Rivers and see what happens.

It's weird to think that Rivers just got bad all of a sudden (though he's been consistently bad for awhile now), but at the same time I can't help but think about the guys around him. Gates and Matthews are never healthy, their line is always beat up. I mean his number one WR leaves in FA, his number one passing option is a shell of his former self, his starting running back can't stay on the field (and doesn't play well when he is on the field), and Norv should have been fired years ago.

If they can snag a top QB prospect in the draft, I think they should do it. That being said, I don't think it should be something they reach for. I think they should be focusing on improving the team overall, and if the value points towards a QB that's the right call, but if it points somewhere else they shouldn't be dead-set on replacing Rivers. I do think if the talent around Rivers is upgraded his level of play will increase, but I don't see him ever getting back to top 7 QB level.

The key things they need to is reinforce the offensive line, improve their running game, and add one big time receiver. Of course if they can snag a top QB prospect like BJ said, then they should look to trade him for maximum value, which I think it's likely that someone overpays for him.

The talent around him doesn't change the fact that he makes awful decisions. I don't know how many times this season alone he should've thrown the ball away but he forces it and it gets intercepted. He didn't used to play that way. Not sure what's going on because you don't just suddenly become a stupid QB one year after being an elite QB for years.

I look forward to another year of Spanos catching us all off guard and keeping both AJ Smith and Norv Turner.

Rivers is like a lot of QBs in this league. You shouldn't expect to go out and single handedly win games. But if you put a good team around him, you should expect him to contribute to your team winning. If I'm a KC, Jacksonville, or NYJ fan, I'd be hoping the Chargers jettison Rivers so my team could take a shot at him. Although, as a Jax or NYJ fan, I'd dread the frustration of my team stubbornly insisting on staying the course on my current QB.

During the preseason i heard something in regards to him losing arm strength... that could have something to do with him regressing

Who's his replacement. Unlike many teams, SD never had to deal with a string of crappy QBs. Some teams spend a decade just to find the guy.

He just forces things, and looks like he lost his mojo. He came in, sat behind Brees, and then went 14-2. After that, the team always started horribly, and only ended up winning their division because the other three teams essentially provided 6 free wins. Ok maybe not all 6 games, but at least 4. The core of the team became complacent, and good players that left never got replaced.

Isn't Spanos like 85 years old? Or does he have a son/daughter that acts as the defacto owner these days? Or are the Chargers ran by a group of investors? I remember reading a few years ago, that the elder Spanos had dementia. Regardless, Norv Turner should have been fired at least 3 years ago. It's even worse than the Jack Del Rio situation was with the Jaguars.

Yep. Heard this last yr too. I see more evidence of it this yr. I was wrong. T hought he'd bounce back. I even thought the Chargers had a good off-season.


I think his brain has regressed as well with the decision making he's doing. Some awful throws, he has no business doing. Talent around him isn't gonna change that really.

Sometimes the brain needs to catch up to the body... he is probably used to making certain throws and still attempts to make tough throws even though he may lack his old zip... losing a couple mph on your velocity can make such a huge difference if you are trying to do too much... i think thats what happened with peyton manning earlier this year and he has adjusted to his physical limitations... if rivers can do the same he can be a solid stater in this league for several more years

and I'm completely flummoxed that Norv Turner still has a job, I'd start there before looking at Rivers (also Antonio Gates isnt quite what he used to be and he was a monster when Rivers was at his best)
