Somebody could die

...and it might not even be concussion or weight related. I hate to say it but it very nearly already happened twice this year and neither got any TV coverage that I can recall:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/1..._hp_ref=sports

Quote:
Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden remains hospitalized in "stable, yet critical" condition after tearing a vein in a collision with a teammate during practice.

Team physician Dr. Walter Lowe said in a statement from the school Thursday that the senior was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital after the collision late Tuesday afternoon. Hayden was rushed into immediate surgery for a tear of the inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the lower half of the body to the heart.

Lowe says that type of injury is fatal "95 percent" of the time. He says such an injury is usually linked to high-speed motor vehicle accidents.

Quote:
According to Glazer, when Amendola's clavicle was dislocated, instead of it popping out away from his body, it actually popped inward toward his heart and his trachea. Glazer talked to trainers and doctors who said they usually see that kind of injury in fatal or near-fatal car accidents.

Soon after his injury, Amendola had to undergo a procedure in which doctors pulled the clavicle away from his aorta and then pushed back on it to see if it would pop out again.
Romo got hurt last year and the bone lodged near his lung or some shit..but all I hear about is concussion discussion while the big hit is still glorified

And yeah it's football and it's a man's game and yadayada but if something like that were to really happen in the course of a game...with today's media how much of a shit storm would that be? Ultimately I don't think anything tangible would happen...football is still king and parents and players would go on acting like it wouldn't happen to them...but I just thought we should actually talk about this...it's past the point of just walking funny once you retire when players are dodging death due to in game injuries...and with guys the size of soda machines running 4.5s it's not going to get any better.

What do you propose? Touch football?

There's really no way around this.

Re: Somebody could die

Better padding? They've beefed up helment padding to try to reduce concussions but these injuries would require improved body padding.

You want these guys to wear kevlar?

A stronger material for the shoulder pads would lead to more heads being snapped back on helmet-to-chest hits. Impact has to be absorbed somewhere; it doesn't just dissipate.

The article raises a concern, but doesn't have an answer. What's your solution?

This is a unique and ridiculous sport, where guys smash into each other in full force. At some point, someone is gonna start bleeding internally.

Forget what they say about it being a 'man's game'. It's a violent game that forces your body to do things it's not meant to do. A lot of NFL vets still carry aches and pains from their playing days.

Most you can do is keep a bunch of sports doctors on the sideline, and add unpopular rules like the defenseless receiver rule. That's it. You can't turn this into Sarcastaball.

There's not much they can really do to be honest. It's terrible but you're probably right, somebody is probably going to die playing this game.

Did they really? Is the possibility of death on field really something that is ever discussed?

Re: Somebody could die

Negative. Being paralyzed is one thing but no one has reaching for a bad pass by your QB, getting blown up by a safety and a bone shredding your aorta in the back of their minds.

Re: Somebody could die

I just think it is important that people know the risks... we are just learning things now about the effects of multiple concussions (i.e. guys like Dave Duerson) so at least in that case there is no possible way that these players actually knew the full extent of what they were getting into. Going forward that's pretty much what you have to do, educate... assuming the game isn't going to fundamentally change. These other freak injuries would fall into the same category, I suppose....

One idea is to take away the pads altogether so that guys don't launch themselves like human cannonballs at people, I'm not really sure if that would work or not. I'm not sure Rugby or Aussie Rules football (the only logical comparisons) allow for the same types of hits that football does.

It already has happened, when I was a kid, 41 years ago now. Never will forget it.

Although it did happen during a game and on the field, it wasn't a result of being hit.
