Somebody could die
...and it might not even be concussion or weight related. I hate to say it but it very nearly already happened twice this year and neither got any TV coverage that I can recall:

And yeah it's football and it's a man's game and yadayada but if something like that were to really happen in the course of a game...with today's media how much of a shit storm would that be? Ultimately I don't think anything tangible would happen...football is still king and parents and players would go on acting like it wouldn't happen to them...but I just thought we should actually talk about this...it's past the point of just walking funny once you retire when players are dodging death due to in game injuries...and with guys the size of soda machines running 4.5s it's not going to get any better. |

A stronger material for the shoulder pads would lead to more heads being snapped back on helmet-to-chest hits. Impact has to be absorbed somewhere; it doesn't just dissipate. The article raises a concern, but doesn't have an answer. What's your solution? This is a unique and ridiculous sport, where guys smash into each other in full force. At some point, someone is gonna start bleeding internally. Forget what they say about it being a 'man's game'. It's a violent game that forces your body to do things it's not meant to do. A lot of NFL vets still carry aches and pains from their playing days. Most you can do is keep a bunch of sports doctors on the sideline, and add unpopular rules like the defenseless receiver rule. That's it. You can't turn this into Sarcastaball.

Re: Somebody could die
There's not much they can really do to be honest. It's terrible but you're probably right, somebody is probably going to die playing this game.

Something in the back of all of their minds.

Re: Somebody could die
Negative. Being paralyzed is one thing but no one has reaching for a bad pass by your QB, getting blown up by a safety and a bone shredding your aorta in the back of their minds.

Re: Somebody could die
I just think it is important that people know the risks... we are just learning things now about the effects of multiple concussions (i.e. guys like Dave Duerson) so at least in that case there is no possible way that these players actually knew the full extent of what they were getting into. Going forward that's pretty much what you have to do, educate... assuming the game isn't going to fundamentally change. These other freak injuries would fall into the same category, I suppose....
One idea is to take away the pads altogether so that guys don't launch themselves like human cannonballs at people, I'm not really sure if that would work or not. I'm not sure Rugby or Aussie Rules football (the only logical comparisons) allow for the same types of hits that football does.
